Asking AgainLuke 18:1

The Long Way Round the Top Field

This message is for A farmer needs courage to go back to the gate where he once asked God out loud about the shake in his hand, and to ask the same thing again without changing a word of it.

For the one who asked God out loud once, in a particular place, and has gone the long way round that place ever since.

The gate at the top of the far field is the good one. Oak, hung properly by somebody's grandfather, and it swings without being lifted, which is more than you can say for the rest of them.

He hasn't walked up to it in eighteen months.

He goes round the bottom lane now. It adds four more minutes and a wet stretch in February, and he has told himself so often that it is gentler on the tractor that he has nearly stopped noticing it isn't accurate. The dog knows. The dog still goes up.

What happened at that gate took about eleven seconds. Ten to six on a Tuesday in March, with the light just arriving over the ridge, he heard his own voice aloud and it startled him, because he hadn't intended to say anything at all. One sentence, about the shake in his right hand, said to God, at a gate, with nobody in the world to hear him.

You have a gate. It might be the third stair, or the corner of a parking lot where you sat with the engine off, or the end of a bed at two in the morning. Somewhere you go the long way round now, with an answer ready in case anybody asks.

You can walk back up to that spot and ask the same thing again, and none of it is a step backward. The written Word of God hands you Jesus' own teaching that His people should always pray and never faint, and the Holy Spirit has preserved that gate in your mind throughout eighteen months of the bottom lane.

The Long Way Round the Top Field

The Lane Round the Bottom

Nobody deliberately sits down and decides to avoid a location. You take the alternative route once because you're late or the ground is soft, then the second occasion it's already a habit, and by the twentieth you've assembled a whole story about the tractor.

That is what makes avoidance so hard to spot in yourself. It doesn't look like fear. It looks like a sensible route, and a sensible route comes with reasons, and reasons can be defended at any kitchen table in the county.

He can pray for anybody else, mind you. He prays at the men's breakfast on the second Saturday, standing up, without notes. Last spring he prayed over a woman who had been given the kind of news nobody expects, and his voice didn't shake once, which is its own quiet joke.

That is usually how it happens. The location you won't revisit is almost never the place where you doubted God. It is the place where you were most exposed, and exposure leaves a mark that looks nothing like unbelief.

Your reluctance is not a sign of small faith, and God has never read it that way. Scripture calls Him the one who knows your frame and remembers you're dust, and the Holy Spirit has remained with you through every single month of the long way round.

What the First Time Cost You

Here is the part worth saying plainly, because almost nobody says it. What restrains you isn't a question about whether He can. You settled that years ago, and you would settle it again tomorrow morning without hesitation.

What you cannot work out is how a person begins again. You put something out of your mouth once, at full stretch, in a place where nobody could hear you. Nothing returned that you could point at, and not knowing what to do with that is the actual injury.

So you went silent about the one subject while remaining vocal about everything else. That isn't hypocrisy. That is a person protecting a wound, which is what people do, and it deserves a gentler name than the one you've been assigning it.

The first asking cost you something real, and it has never once counted against you. The written Word of God nowhere makes God's hearing depend on a result you can measure, and the Holy Spirit has been holding that sentence of yours the entire time you've been avoiding the hill.

Nobody Is Grading the Words

What people reach for, when they finally decide to ask again, is a better version. A tighter sentence. A stronger feeling behind it. Somebody at the back of the mind insists the first one must have been wrong somewhere, or it would have worked.

Set that down before you go any further. There is no better wording waiting to be found, and if there were, the whole thing would stop being prayer and start being a combination lock.

You have never been dealing with a lock. You are dealing with a Father, and the only thing a father wants from a son who has gone silent is simply the sound of him talking again.

You do not need a better sentence, because the one you said was never the problem. Scripture never connects God's hearing to your phrasing, and the Holy Spirit is described as the one who helps you pray when you've no idea how to.

He Told Them Why Before He Told the Story

Jesus once told a parable about a widow and a judge who cared for nobody, and Luke gives you the reason for it before the story begins.

> And he spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint; > Luke 18:1 (KJV)

Not to faint. That is the whole reason the parable was told, and everything inside it depends on that single line.

Look carefully at what He doesn't say there. He doesn't tell them to sharpen the request. He doesn't offer a better hour, a better phrase, or a better mood to say it in. He gives His people permission to keep coming back with the same request, and the woman in the story never changes her sentence once from beginning to end.

That is the turn, and it is smaller than a method and far sturdier. Asking again is not a technique that works where your first try failed. It is a return, by somebody who was never sent away, to a Father who never closed the conversation at all. Asking a second time is not a second attempt. It is the same person coming back to the same God with the same need, and being welcome.

You are welcome at that gate with the same request, in the words you already used. The written Word of God records Jesus teaching His own people to keep asking and not lose heart, and the Holy Spirit is the one accompanying you up the hill.

Declare this over yourself

You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so what follows is not a claim made out of your own authority. It is agreement, said back to God in His own words, while the Holy Spirit carries it. How He orders the rest of it is His to decide, and He answers in His own way and in His own time.

That gate was hung right by a man forty years dead, and it still swings without being lifted. Your welcome with God hangs the same way. Christ hung it, He hung it well, and eighteen months of the bottom lane has not pulled it off its hinges. So what follows is a farmer walking back up his own hill, not a farmer reapplying for something. It lifts nothing and it fixes no date, and what God does about your right hand, and when, has been His the whole eighteen months.

I am allowed to ask again at that gate, with the same sentence I said there eighteen months ago. Nothing was wrong with the first asking, and the quiet that came after it was no ruling on the farmer who said it. The written Word of God says Jesus taught His people to pray always and not to faint, so I stand on that welcome rather than on a better sentence. There is no improved wording for me to hunt, because the one I said out loud was never the problem. The Holy Spirit walked up the hill beside me this morning and wanted nothing neater out of me. He is not tired of me, and I come back to that gate with it today, and the shake in my right hand stays His.
