Asking AgainLuke 18:1-8

The Same Rent on a Fresh Page

This message is for A restaurant owner facing the same rent shortfall for a second month needs courage to write the same request on a fresh page without improving the method, blaming the first prayer, or bargaining with God.

For the owner opening a clean ledger page to ask God for the very same rent again.

How long did you sit there with the pen in your hand before you wrote anything down at all?

That particular pause is the part nobody else in the building ever sees. The ledger lies open on the counter, last month's invoice sits beside it with PAID stamped across one corner, and the figure for this month is already settled in your head. You could have written it down in about four seconds, and you didn't, because writing it means asking God again. Asking again feels like standing up in a crowded room to admit that the first prayer went absolutely nowhere.

So the pen starts doing something other than writing the number. It adds a line of gratitude at the top, because gratitude feels much safer than plain need, and then it reaches for a stronger word somewhere in the middle. It drifts toward a promise about Saturdays, a rule about food, a trade that nobody ever asked you to make. Look up after ten minutes and the page is not a request anymore, because it has turned into a negotiation table with fear keeping the accounts.

Let me take that trade off the page before either of us goes one step further.

You may bring God the same need in the same plain words, with nothing about the first asking repaired. The written Word says that men ought always to pray and not to faint, and the Holy Spirit carries your return without once asking you to account for the silence in between.

The Same Rent on a Fresh Page

What a Second Month Actually Says

A second month says exactly one thing, and it is a remarkably short thing. The gap between what is owed and what actually sits in the account did not close, and that is the entire message. It carries no verdict on your first prayer, no report card on your trust, and no note from God explaining why the money stayed exactly where it was.

Fear insists on reading it another way. Fear treats a returning need like a returned letter, stamped and refused at the counter, and then hands you the job of working out what was wrong with the envelope.

You have probably done that job already, late in the evening, with the doors locked and the chairs turned up on the tables. You went back over the words you used and wondered whether you had sounded too casual about the whole situation. You wondered whether you should have fasted, or prayed in the kitchen instead of the car, or told somebody so that two of you were asking at once.

None of that checking has anything to do with faith. It is a tired person hunting for a lever in a room where God has already put a door.

You have the access you are trying to earn, and you had every bit of it the first time you asked. Scripture sets the way to the Father wide open through Christ, and the Holy Spirit helps your weakness in prayer rather than grading the sentence you managed to get out.

Jesus told a story about a widow who kept going back to a judge, and Luke gives us the purpose of the story before it has even started.

And he spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint;Luke 18:1 (KJV)

Notice carefully what the widow never does. She doesn't hunt for a better phrase between visits, and she doesn't arrive with a bargain folded in her hand. She never apologizes for coming back either. She keeps saying the same thing because the same thing is still true, which is the only reason anybody has ever needed.

Jesus isn't comparing God to that judge either. He sets the two of them side by side so that the contrast can do the work for him. If a man who feared nobody at all could still be reached, how much more freely can you come to a Father who has already handed over His own Son for you.

When the Ledger Stops Being a Courtroom

The turn here is a small one, and it happens on the page already lying in front of you. Your ledger quietly stops being a courtroom.

A courtroom requires a charge, a defense, and somebody who eventually loses. That is what the page had slowly become while you were adding gratitude you didn't feel and promises you couldn't possibly keep. You were building a defense against a case that nobody had ever brought, in front of a Father who was never once the prosecutor.

A ledger is an entirely different kind of paper, because it only records what happens to be true. The rent is this much, the account holds that much, and the difference between the two is a single number. That number is information rather than a charge, and it was never meant to be read aloud against you.

What you are doing when you write it down again is not applying pressure. Pressure is what you use on somebody who might not actually want to help you. You are telling your Father the truth a second time, in the ordinary way that a household tells the truth at the kitchen table, and the ordinary way has always been enough.

The rent may be met from a direction you have not thought of. An arrangement may open up. A genuinely hard decision may come instead, and this page refuses to pretend it knows which one is coming. God is Lord of the outcome, and you were never the person asked to carry that part of it.

You are not on trial at this counter, and the need that came back is not the charge sheet. Scripture seats you as a child in the house rather than a defendant at the door, and the Holy Spirit stands beside you at the page as the Helper He actually is.

Declare this over yourself

You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so what follows is not a claim made out of your own authority. It is agreement, said back to God in His own words, while the Holy Spirit carries it. How He orders the rest of it is His to decide, and He answers in His own way and in His own time.

You do not rent your place with God. Christ bought the whole of it outright, there is no month owing on it, and a second asking does not put it back on the market. So what follows is you at the counter telling the truth a second time. It fixes no figure and sets no date. What God sends toward that rent, and when it comes, stayed His the whole time you sat there with the pen.

I am allowed to ask a second time, and the same rent on a fresh page is not evidence against me. Scripture tells me to pray and not to faint, so I come back as a child who is still in the house rather than a nuisance at the door. I refuse the bargain that fear keeps writing at the bottom of my ledger, and I take back every promise I made to try to buy an answer. My first asking was heard, and I have nothing to repair before I open my mouth again. The Holy Spirit helps me pray on the mornings I have no words worth keeping, and He is not tired of the sound of me. I bring the same need in the same plain words, and I leave the whole outcome where it belongs.
