Sixteen Years Beside the Walking Frame

This message is for A believer who assumes present-day healing claims collapse under long review needs the Antonia Raco record held at exactly its documented strength, so they can cross from He did to He does without being argued into it.

For the believer who assumes a healing claim cannot survive a long, careful look at it.

A walking frame takes up more room in a hallway than anybody expects.

Four legs, rubber feet worn flat along the inside edge, a gray handgrip polished pale where one palm rested on it every day for years. It leans beside the door. Somebody moves it whenever the groceries come in. Of everything in a house, it is the most patient thing there, because it has no opinion at all about how long this goes on.

Now set two dates on the table beside it. Summer 2009. The sixteenth of April, 2025.

I want to begin there rather than with a claim, because if you are the reader I have in mind, the claim is the part you have learned to back away from. You have heard accounts that grew between one telling and the next. You have watched one person's recovery measured against another person's body like a tailor's tape. So you keep a distance between yourself and the whole subject, and I am not going to ask you to close it.

You are allowed to stay careful and still let this stand in front of you. Said with no picture on it: a long, honest look at a record does not put God at risk, and it never has. The Holy Spirit has never been made nervous by an unhurried reading. Scripture asks you to trust God, and it nowhere asks you to switch your judgment off first.

Sixteen Years Beside the Walking Frame

Careful Is Not the Same as Closed

A closed mind and a careful one are not the same thing, and you have been accused of the first while doing the second for most of your adult life.

A careful mind asks who reported it, when they reported it, and what exactly they claimed. A closed mind settles the answer in advance and then goes hunting for a reason to keep it. The second is cheaper, and from the inside the two feel nearly the same, which is why the difference is worth guarding.

Careful costs something, and you have been paying it for years. A careful mind has to wait. It has to hold a question open past the point where holding it open is comfortable, and nobody thanks anybody for that. The answer either stands up later or it leans, and waiting is the only honest way to find out which.

You are not disobeying God by wanting a long look at something. It is written that we prove what we hear and hold on to what is good, so the waiting itself is obedience. That kind of patience comes from the Holy Spirit rather than from anybody's temperament.

What being careful cannot do is write a rule. It can look at one account and report what it found. It cannot decide, from the date at the top of the page, that God has finished working.

What Sixteen Years Are For

Sixteen years is a long while to leave a question standing open.

It is long enough for the excitement around an event to drain completely out of it. It is long enough for the people who were there to move away, change jobs, and tell the account until the edges have worn smooth. It is long enough for anybody who wanted to overturn it to have gone looking properly.

That is what a delay is for. A delay is not an insult to a claim. It is the only real compliment a careful person knows how to pay one.

You already know this from whatever job you had. The work signed off the same afternoon is the work you quietly go back and check. The work that sat under review for years, with people paid to find the fault in it, is the work you stop worrying about.

You are not required to choose between honesty and hope. Both of them ride in the same hand in Scripture, with no strain anywhere in the grip. Not once has the Holy Spirit asked a believer to become less truthful in order to become more open.

So hold the account I am about to give you loosely enough to look at and long enough to see. That is all. Nothing in the rest of this page asks you for more than that.

The Calendar Was Never the Verdict

Let me name the sentence I think you have actually been carrying.

It goes something like this: that kind of event belonged to a different century, and the further we get from it the thinner the accounts become. It sounds like humility. It sounds like the sober position a serious believer would take. Underneath, though, it is a rule built entirely out of a date.

A calendar counts years. That is its whole job, and it does it well. What a calendar cannot do is tell you what God is allowed to do inside the years it counts.

> Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever. > Hebrews 13:8 (KJV)

Look at how that line is built. Three words for time, and one name holding all three of them up. Yesterday is not the strong end of the sentence. For ever is not a far off promise that starts after you die. To day stands in the middle, carrying the same weight as the other two, and it means the actual day you are reading this on.

You are not a century too late for the same Jesus. A calendar counts years and does nothing else. Scripture names the one Person who stands over all of them unchanged, and the Holy Spirit keeps that true over a hall with a walking frame leaning by the door, forcing no outcome through.

That verse does not promise you a recovery, a date, or a copy of anybody else's account. It never did, and people get hurt when it is made to. What it will not allow is a rule that quietly retires God at some point between the first century and this one.

Declare this over yourself

You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so what follows is not a claim made out of your own authority. It is agreement, said back to God in His own words, while the Holy Spirit carries it. How He orders the rest of it is His to decide, and He answers in His own way and in His own time.

Christ set you where you stand long before you knew to ask, and nothing below is holding you up. You are not working here to earn a place you already have. These words open your asking and arrange nothing after it, because what God does, and when, was never yours to schedule.

I am not standing on the far side of a crossing I cannot make, and I am not reading about a God who has finished working. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever, and Scripture says that over this decade as plainly as over any other. A long review did not shrink Him, and no calendar on any wall has authority to retire Him. I keep my carefulness, because the Holy Spirit has never asked me to trade an honest mind for an open heart. The account I was handed belongs to the woman who lived it, and I am not asking for a copy. I hold my own asking open, unhurried, with nothing gripped in either hand. What God does, and when, stays with Him, and I leave it there gladly.
