For the believer who trusts a follow-up more than a testimony, and has never been told that is allowed.
The crowd in John's ninth chapter wanted the story. The people with the authority wanted the paperwork.
A man blind from birth is given his sight on a Sabbath, and what follows is not a celebration. It's an investigation. They ask him how it happened. They send for his parents, who answer carefully, because they know what a wrong answer will cost them at the synagogue door. Then they call the man back a second time and question him all over again, hoping the second telling won't match the first.
He gives them the plainest sentence in the chapter.
He answered and said, Whether he be a sinner or no, I know not: one thing I know, that, whereas I was blind, now I see.John 9:25 (KJV)
You probably like that man, and I suspect you also recognize the people questioning him, because on this subject you have usually been the one asking the second round. You'd rather be accurate than excited. When somebody tells you about a healing, you don't argue, you simply want to know what happened next month, and next year, and whether anybody wrote it down.
You are not required to settle this in one sitting, and nobody here is rushing you. Here is the point with nothing on it: checking carefully is not the opposite of faith, and a long record has never made God smaller. The Holy Spirit has never hurried a man who checks his sources first. Scripture puts the living Christ in the present tense over the years you have actually lived, and it does that without asking you to agree quickly.

The Follow-Up Is the Evidence
Notice what the ninth chapter of John actually is.
It isn't a moment, retold warmly by somebody who was standing nearby. It's the record of an investigation, with witnesses called, parents interviewed, a second round of questions, and a man whose account never changed under pressure. Whoever wrote it kept the awkward parts in.
That tells you something about how Scripture handles this subject. It doesn't hurry you past the checking. It puts the checking right on the page.
You are not less spiritual for wanting the follow-up. Look at what God's word kept on the page. The second round of questions is there, and the nervous parents, and the answers that cost somebody something at the synagogue door. It was the Holy Spirit who moved men to write all that down, and He has never asked a believer to become careless in order to become open.
I press this because somewhere along the way you may have been made to feel that your care was the problem. It isn't. Care is what you give to a subject you mean to keep, and you have meant to keep this one for a very long time, the way a person keeps a book on the table they mean to finish.
Why the Moment Is Never the Point
Look at what happens to most accounts you're handed.
They arrive as a moment. The room, the prayer, the sudden change, and then the telling stops, because the moment is the part that moves a room. Nobody comes back six months later to report what the chart on the wall reads now. The account has no second chapter, so it either has to be taken whole or set down whole.
That is exactly why you set them down. Not from unbelief. From the perfectly reasonable instinct that a claim with no follow-up is a claim you cannot check.
You are not disqualified by that instinct, and you never were. It is written that we prove what we hear and hold on to what is good. That kind of patience is the Holy Spirit's own work in an ordinary man, and never a fault in him.
There is a cost to that instinct, though, and you have been paying it quietly for years. A claim you cannot check gets set down. Set enough of them down and the whole subject goes with them, not by a decision you ever made, but by a pile of small honest refusals. You never decided that God stopped. You simply ran out of accounts you were able to pick up.
So let me hand you an account where the follow-up is the longest part of it.
The Sentence With No End Date
Here is where the long record leads, and it isn't where you may expect.
A follow-up cannot tell you about God. It can tell you that measurements were taken, that somebody kept coming back to the chart on the wall, and that the numbers held. That is a great deal, and it is still only about a record.
The thing your carefulness has been protecting is older than any journal and does not lean on one.
> Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever. > Hebrews 13:8 (KJV)
Look at how that line is built. One name, three words for time, no seam between them, and no end date anywhere in the sentence. Yesterday is not the strong end of it. For ever is not a far off arrangement that starts after you die. To day stands in the middle carrying the same weight, and it means the day you are reading this on.
You are standing in Christ's today, not in the margin beside it. One name, three words for time, and no seam anywhere between them. The Word says it exactly that way, and the Holy Spirit holds that unbroken line open in front of you, forcing no outcome through it.
That verse promises you no recovery and no timetable. It never did, and people have been hurt where it was made to. What it will not allow is a quiet rule that retires God somewhere between the last page of Acts and this afternoon.
Declare this over yourself
You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so what follows is not a claim made out of your own authority. It is agreement, said back to God in His own words, while the Holy Spirit carries it. How He orders the rest of it is His to decide, and He answers in His own way and in His own time.
Read what follows the way you read an entry already made in the record, in ink that dried before you got here. Christ entered your standing there, and you are not writing it as you speak. Nothing below sets a date, names a figure, or tells God about a single outcome. It leaves the file open in front of Him, which is the one thing an open file is for.
The long record did not shrink my God, and I am not reading a date as a verdict. He has not changed. What He did then, He is doing now, and Scripture says that over the years I have actually lived through. My carefulness stays exactly where it is, because the Holy Spirit has never once asked me to stop weighing in order to start trusting. I do not need a copy of anyone else's ending to keep this open. The file stays open in front of God, my hand empty and nothing demanded in it. The timing and the manner are God's, I leave them there, and I keep asking.
