What I SawLuke 2:19

Gold Light Across the Kitchen Tiles

This message is for A woman who saw an unexplained shaft of gold light cross an ordinary kitchen during prayer needs permission to keep the memory without decoding it, grading it, or turning it into a message for anyone else.

For the believer who saw something in an ordinary room and has never said it out loud.

Picture a kitchen late in the afternoon, the last plate still wet, a dish towel hanging over one shoulder. A woman has been praying at the sink about nothing dramatic, a single name repeated quietly and then a long silence. A narrow band of golden light crosses three blue tiles on the floor, in the exact place where the cupboard should have been throwing a shadow. It lasts about as long as a single breath. Then the kitchen is merely a kitchen again, humming and utterly ordinary.

That scene is composed rather than reported, and I've put it at the top for one reason. Something similar happened to you, in a room every bit as ordinary as that one, and you have never described it out loud to a single person.

You remember the hour. You remember exactly what you were praying about, and how long you remained there afterward with your hands still wet. You've carried it for years without entrusting it to anybody, and you've never quite decided whether that was wisdom or cowardice.

You are allowed to keep what you saw without ever deciding what it meant. Scripture makes room for a woman who treasured a moment quietly instead of explaining it, and the Holy Spirit has never asked you to produce a verdict before He will sit in the room with you.

Gold Light Across the Kitchen Tiles

Where the Two Voices Come From

Every time you reach for the memory, two voices arrive ahead of you.

The first one is quick and perfectly reasonable. Your eyes were tired that afternoon. The cupboard door was probably standing open at a slight angle. You had been praying, and prayer makes a person suggestible. That voice doesn't sound like an enemy, because it sounds like ordinary good sense, and good sense is something you genuinely respect.

The second voice is louder and it arrives disguised as faith. If the light was genuine, it says, then the light was sent, and anything sent always carries an assignment. Somebody needs to hear about this. There must be a meaning hidden in the color, or in the number of tiles, or in the name you were praying over.

Both voices want the same thing out of you, which is a ruling. One wants you to rule that nothing happened at all. The other wants you to rule on what it meant and then go and tell people. Between the two of them, you have spent years as a witness in a courtroom that nobody ever convened.

You do not owe a ruling to either voice, and you never did. The written Word never hands your private memory the authority of doctrine, and the Holy Spirit is not standing at the door waiting for your explanation before He comes in.

The Room Mary Kept It In

Luke devotes a single sentence to a woman who had greater reason than anybody alive to begin explaining.

But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart.Luke 2:19 (KJV)

She had shepherds at the door with an extraordinary story about the sky over their field. She had every reason to build a public account out of it, and she didn't build one. She kept it instead. Her heart became a place of custody rather than a platform, and Luke records that choice without a single word of criticism.

Now hear the boundary clearly, because the boundary is exactly what protects you. Your kitchen is not Luke's Gospel. What you saw carries no authority over anybody's life, including your own, and it was never meant to. That isn't a demotion of your afternoon. It is the exact reason you are free.

A memory that has to govern somebody is a memory you are obliged to defend. A memory that governs nobody is simply allowed to be true. You can say, "I saw gold light cross the tiles while I prayed, and I don't know what it was," and that sentence neither preaches nor apologizes.

What you saw was never asked to carry doctrine, and that is why you can carry it lightly. Scripture holds the authority in your house, and the Holy Spirit has no interest whatever in making one quiet afternoon compete with the written Word of God.

The Day the Courtroom Closes

The turn here isn't a better answer about the light. It is the courtroom finally emptying out.

For years you have been supplying testimony to both benches at once. The prosecution says the cupboard threw that light and your tired eyes invented the rest. The defense says gold must signify glory, three tiles must represent three of something, and the name you prayed must now be owed a particular future. Both sides keep demanding a verdict, and you keep climbing back into the witness box to deliver one.

You are allowed to stand up and walk home.

The memory can remain an experience instead of becoming an assignment. You don't have to grade it out of ten. You don't have to decide tonight whether it was ordinary light or something else. You especially don't have to call the person whose name you prayed and tell them that you saw something.

That last one matters more than it looks. When a private moment brushes against somebody else's life, love keeps the moment small. The words "God showed me" can become a locked door around another person's own hearing, and their freedom is not a loose thread for your interpretation to pull. If God intends to guide them, He is well able to do it through Scripture and His Spirit without your help.

So keep the scene at its true size: a plate, a towel, three blue tiles, a band of gold, and silence. Kept that small, it can't be pressed into service by your fear or by anybody else's excitement. You can thank God for being near you without claiming that He explained the light in the kitchen. You can treasure the peace without publishing a forecast.

You are held by Jesus whether that light is ever explained or not. Scripture rests your faith on the finished work of Christ rather than on an unusual afternoon, and the Holy Spirit steadies you there every day the memory stays unexplained.

Declare this over yourself

You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so what follows is not a claim made out of your own authority. It is agreement, said back to God in His own words, while the Holy Spirit carries it. How He orders the rest of it is His to decide, and He answers in His own way and in His own time.

These are words to keep, not evidence to produce. Your standing with God is the one part of this kitchen you have never had to account for, because Christ established it there while you were occupied with the plates, and no explanation of yours holds it up. The lines below hold something gently and publish nothing, and what crossed those tiles remains with God, who owes nobody the answer.

I keep what I saw, and I keep it without owing anybody an explanation for it. Scripture hands me the pattern of a woman who pondered a matter in her own heart, so my memory of gold light across the kitchen tiles rests under the written Word and never above it. I refuse the voice that calls me foolish, and I refuse the voice that insists I must turn this into a message for somebody else. The Holy Spirit was near me at that sink before I had a single word for any of it, and He has never once needed me to make the light bigger than it was. What I cannot name remains with God, and it sits lightly with me. I am not a witness on trial, and I have nothing to prove at my own kitchen table.
