For the searcher holding better information and afraid to pray the very same words twice.
The slip is a rectangle of yellow paper with three ruled boxes and a line for the date.
One box takes the call number, one takes the title, and the last one takes anything the searcher already happens to know. It is ordinary stationery, printed by the hundred, kept in a shallow wooden tray beside the reference desk. Nobody in the building has ever thought about one of them for longer than four seconds.
You are thinking about this one. You filled out the first slip on Monday and walked the length of the room to shelf C, and position six was empty, as empty as the catalog card insisted it should be full. You prayed on the way there, quietly, in the ordinary way you pray about work.
Somewhere between Monday and this afternoon a thought arrived and sat down beside you. Perhaps Monday came to nothing because the first slip carried the wrong name in the wrong box. Perhaps the second prayer needs the corrected number inside it, spoken properly, before heaven takes the matter seriously.
Let me put a knife between those two ideas before we go any further.
You can correct the card without believing for a moment that your correction is what makes God hear you. The written Word keeps prayer a relationship rather than a procedure, and the Holy Spirit receives a plain sentence exactly as readily as a precise one.
Careful Work and Open Prayer Are Two Different Rooms
Your work should get better, and there is no piety in refusing to let it. If the transfer log has never been checked, go and check the transfer log. If the older recordings were sometimes filed under the interviewer instead of the speaker, then write both names down and search under both.
That is not faithlessness dressed up as diligence. That is what it looks like to love something a stranger handed you for keeping, on the understanding that you would take it seriously after he was gone.
The trouble starts somewhere else entirely, and it starts quietly. It starts the evening you go back over Monday's prayer looking for the flaw in it, the way you would go back over a form looking for the field you left blank. You read your own sentence again and wonder whether it was too casual, too short, too general, too close to the way you talk to everybody else.
What must not happen is the quiet slide from one room into the other. Careful cataloging belongs to the catalog. It does not become a password, and the moment you start hoping that it might, the search stops being a search and turns into a ritual performed at a shelf.
You are free to be exact with the card and unhurried with God at the same time. Scripture anchors your welcome in Christ rather than in your accuracy, and the Holy Spirit is not standing at the shelf waiting for you to spell something correctly.
Jesus told a story about a widow who kept returning to a judge, and Luke tells us the purpose of it before the story opens.
And he spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint;Luke 18:1 (KJV)
Look at what that sentence does and does not give you. It gives a reason to keep coming, which is that you were never meant to lose heart. It hands over no phrase, no posture, no order of words, and no required level of verbal accuracy.
The widow is memorable for one reason only. She came back with the same matter while the same matter remained unsettled, and nothing in the account suggests she ever improved her delivery between visits.
When the Slip Goes Back to Being Paper
Here is the turn, and it is quieter than you might expect. The slip goes back to being paper.
For a few days it had become something else in your mind. It had become the instrument, the thing that might work where the last thing didn't, and every extra detail you copied onto it carried a little weight of hope that paper was never built to hold. That is a heavy job for four inches of yellow stationery.
Set it down as what it actually is. It is a note to a colleague and a reminder to yourself, and it belongs entirely to the archive rather than to your relationship with God.
Your prayer goes back to being what it actually is as well. It is the speech of a child to a Father through Christ, spoken out loud in a building full of other people's voices, and it needs no call number attached to be understood.
Something eases in a person when those two are finally separated again. You stop carrying the archive into your praying and the praying into your archive, and both of them get to be themselves. The catalog can be wrong and corrected a dozen times over without any of it touching your standing, and your standing can be entirely secure while the shelf stays stubbornly empty.
That is not resignation about the recording either. You can want it found with your whole heart, and say so, and keep saying so on every day the drawer stays open.
The recording may turn up in a box nobody has opened since the move. It may have been filed under the interviewer after all. It may be genuinely gone, and this page will not invent an ending to make the second prayer look justified.
You are not running an experiment where the second attempt must succeed to be worth making. Scripture calls the returning itself faithful, and the Holy Spirit holds the outcome in God's hands rather than hanging it on your method.
Declare this over yourself
You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so what follows is not a claim made out of your own authority. It is agreement, said back to God in His own words, while the Holy Spirit carries it. How He orders the rest of it is His to decide, and He answers in His own way and in His own time.
No slip is being filled in here, and nothing below is a request for admission. Christ wrote your name where it belongs and it has never once gone missing off that shelf, and no care you have ever taken with a catalog bought it for you. The lines that follow ask for the recording and arrange nothing past the asking. Whether it surfaces, and in what month, sits with God and stays there.
I am allowed to ask a second time for the same recording, and my second sentence is not a repair of my first. Scripture tells me to pray and not to faint, so I come back to my Father as a child rather than as somebody working a lock. I refuse the thought that a corrected card, a better term, or a more careful wording is what opens the ear of God. My work stays careful because the search deserves care, and it buys me nothing at all at the throne. The Holy Spirit carries this request on the days my words come out plain and tired, and He has never once asked me for a polished version. I hold the same need in an open hand, and I leave every part of the outcome with God.
