Asking AgainLuke 18:1-8

The New Page Beside the Old Envelope

This message is for A father who sealed one unanswered request away years ago needs courage to write the same request on a clean page today, without searching for a better method, a stronger mood, or a hidden defect in his first prayer.

For the one who sealed a prayer away years ago and cannot bring themselves to write the same request out again today.

A widow in one of Jesus' parables wears a path to a man's door.

She has no husband to speak for her, no money to hurry her case along, and no standing at all in that city. The judge on the other side of the door fears neither God nor anybody's opinion, and he would tell you so himself. She comes anyway, and she says the same thing every time she comes. Give me justice against my adversary.

She never rephrases it. She doesn't arrive with a new argument, a better hour, or a friend of higher rank to speak for her. She brings the same sentence to the same door until the man finally gives way.

You already recognize something about that door, even if your version of it is a drawer. Somewhere in your household is a request you made once, in full, and then put away when nothing came of it.

You may bring that same request to God again today, word for word, and it takes nothing away from the first time you asked.

The Holy Spirit is the one drawing you back toward that particular drawer this morning. It is written that His people ought always to pray and not to faint, and that is Jesus' own instruction rather than an allowance somebody invented for you.

The New Page Beside the Old Envelope

What the Sealed Envelope Held

There is a father I would like you to hold in your mind while we talk, because his drawer and yours are close cousins.

Years ago he sealed an envelope. No address on it, only a year in the upper corner and his daughter's first name written across the middle. He had prayed through most of a night, asked God for one clear thing concerning her life, then pressed the flap down and put it at the bottom of the drawer to mark the night.

What he asked for didn't arrive in the shape he had hoped. The envelope remained sealed. His hand brushed it now and then while reaching past it for something else, and each time there was that small retreat inside his chest, so quick he had stopped noticing he did it.

An envelope like that stops being a record after a while. It becomes a verdict, filed where you can feel it without ever having to read it. You may have one too, and it may not be paper at all. It might be a note on a phone you've never deleted, or a hospital wristband in a box, or a date you still mark quietly every year without telling the people around you.

Your sealed request is not a closed case, and God has never treated it as one.

Scripture calls God the one who keeps the tears of His people in His own book, and that is not the filing of somebody who has moved on. The Holy Spirit has been holding that prayer of yours throughout every year it remained in the dark.

The Search for a Better Prayer

One morning the father sets the envelope on the table next to a clean page and writes his daughter's name at the top. Then he stops, and the questions arrive in order, the way they always do.

Was the original prayer too desperate? Should this version sound more surrendered, or more confident, or clearer about what he actually wants? Is there a sentence God has been waiting to hear, and has he simply never found it?

That search feels like diligence, and it is one of the heaviest burdens a believing person ever picks up. It turns prayer into a lock and your words into a key, and it quietly puts the entire outcome back on your side of the table. Worse, it never finishes. There is always a more surrendered phrasing available, always a steadier feeling you didn't manage, always one more condition you could have satisfied before you opened your mouth.

I am not going to hand you that burden. The weight of an unanswered prayer has never belonged to you, and I refuse to transfer it back to you disguised in a kinder word.

The silence you met was not a judgment on your praying, and it asked you to fix nothing.

Nowhere does the written Word tie God's hearing to your phrasing, and the Holy Spirit is named as the one who helps you pray when you cannot find words at all.

So the clean page is not a correction of the sealed one. There is no better version waiting to be found, no fault to hunt for, no stronger posture to reach before you are allowed back through the door.

The father picks the pen up three times before anything happens. Twice he begins rewriting the request into something that sounds stronger, and twice he crosses it out, because he can hear what he is doing and he doesn't like the sound of it. In the end he copies the first sentence out exactly, same name, same one clear thing, and reads it aloud once to a room with nobody else in it.

He Is Not the Judge in the Story

Here is the part people overlook in that parable, and it is the part that turns everything around.

> And shall not God avenge his own elect, which cry day and night unto him, though he bear long with them? I tell you that he will avenge them speedily. Nevertheless when the Son of man cometh, shall he find faith on the earth? > Luke 18:7-8 (KJV)

Jesus sets God against that judge, not beside him. The judge had to be worn down by a woman with nothing, until her coming back became a nuisance he wanted rid of. God is described in the opposite direction entirely, as the one who is already inclined toward His own people while they cry out to Him day and night.

That matters more than it looks. If God were the judge in the parable, then your repeated asking would be pressure, and pressure is a technique, and a technique is something you can perform badly. Jesus closes that door before anybody can walk through it.

So your coming back is not you wearing God down. It is a child returning to a Father who has been described, by Jesus Himself, as the opposite of reluctant. The verse is a character reference rather than a timetable, and Jesus places no date into your hand there at all.

You are welcome back with the same request, in the same words you sealed away.

Jesus set God against that judge rather than beside him, and the Word keeps those two far apart. The Holy Spirit carried you as far as this page in the morning light, and He did it without one word of pressure.

Declare this over yourself

You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so what follows is not a claim made out of your own authority. It is agreement, said back to God in His own words, while the Holy Spirit carries it. How He orders the rest of it is His to decide, and He answers in His own way and in His own time.

Say it in the morning light with the clean page in front of you, plainly, the way her name is written across that envelope. Christ finished what you are standing inside, and no sealed flap at the bottom of a drawer ever put you there or took you back out. What follows calls off a search nobody in heaven ever sent you on. It orders nothing and it schedules nothing, because that has been God's since the night you pressed the flap down.

I am allowed to ask again, word for word, beside the envelope I sealed years ago. My first prayer was not a defect, and the years of quiet that followed were no judgment on me or on the one I love. The written Word of God says Jesus taught His people to pray always and not to faint, so my standing rests there and not on my phrasing. I am not wearing God down, reaching for a stronger mood, or looking for the method that finally works. The Holy Spirit is praying in this room alongside me and has never wanted the sealed version rewritten first. He is not tired of me, and today the same request goes onto a clean page in the morning light, with the outcome still His.
