Asking AgainLuke 18:1-8

The Boiler Estimate on the Second Page

This message is for A community kitchen steward needs courage to bring the same request for a failed boiler repair to God again, in the same words, without treating repetition as a technique or the first prayer as a mistake.

For the believer holding a request they already prayed once, afraid that saying it again admits the first try was wrong.

The estimate is a single sheet of paper, folded twice, gone soft at the crease from repeated handling over the winter.

It names a part, a labor charge, and a total that has not changed since the last quote came through. The kitchen it belongs to is cold. Volunteers keep their coats buttoned while the soup gets made, and nobody mentions it, because mentioning it would mean saying out loud how long this has gone on.

In a drawer underneath the counter sits the first page. The request was written there by hand and prayed once, slowly, over a mug that went cold before the amen. Nothing came of it that anybody could see, and the boiler still clicks without catching.

Now a clean page waits on the table, with a pen hovering above it and writing nothing.

You recognize that pause. You have felt it over a different sheet of paper about a different need, and it may have been as recently as this week. The pen stops because writing the same sentence twice feels like a complaint against God, or an admission that you got something wrong the first time.

You are free to bring God the same request, in the same words, without treating your first prayer as the mistake.

Jesus opened His mouth on this subject to say that His people ought always to pray and not to faint, and it is written that way, plainly, before He tells the story at all. The Holy Spirit is not waiting on a better sentence from you before He hears you.

The Boiler Estimate on the Second Page

What the Clean Page Is Actually For

A fresh page can seem to be a verdict on the one before it. That is the trick of it, and it is not true.

The clean page is not a correction notice. It is not a second draft handed back to you with the errors circled in red. It is paper, and paper holds no opinion at all about your praying. What it offers is room, which is an entirely different thing.

Think what you would have to believe for the second asking to be shameful. You would have to believe that God heard you once and then filed you under finished for good. You would have to believe that the door He opened for you in Christ swings one way and locks behind you.

God has set no limit on how often you may come, and you don't have to earn the second visit.

The Holy Spirit walks you through that door every single time you come. It was never your effort that opened it, and Scripture rests the whole weight of it on the finished work of Jesus.

The people who keep a kitchen like that one running have learned something about repeating themselves without ever deciding to. They order the same flour every single week. They wipe the same table at the same hour, and nobody calls that a failure of imagination. It is what care looks like once it outlasts a mood.

The Thing Nobody Says Out Loud About Asking Twice

Here is the quiet fear sitting right underneath the pen. If asking again is allowed, then the first silence needs an explanation, and every explanation on offer seems to land on you.

Perhaps the wording was careless, or too plain, or too demanding. Perhaps you should have fasted, or waited, or gathered more people around it. Perhaps there was something buried in you that blocked the whole thing. You have heard versions of all three, and you were too tired to argue with any of them, so you gave the asking up instead.

I am not putting a single word of that back on you. The burden of an unanswered prayer was never yours to carry, and this page will not hand it back to you now dressed up in a kinder name.

The silence you met was not a grade on your praying, and it never required you to improve.

Nowhere does the written Word tie God's hearing to your method, and the Holy Spirit stands beside you as the one who makes you able to pray at all.

So the second asking is not a repair job on the first one. There is nothing to fix, no phrase to hunt down, no better posture to find before you are let back in. That whole search is a burden somebody else invented, and you can set it down on the counter and leave it there.

Cold Rooms and Long Patience

A cold room teaches you to measure time differently. You stop counting days and start working out how many more weeks the volunteers can take before somebody quietly stops turning up. That kind of waiting wears at a person in a way nobody photographs.

Here is what long waiting usually does to prayer. It does not end it outright. It thins it, until the request becomes a thought you hold near God rather than a sentence you say to Him, and a person can live years in that thin place without noticing the change.

I will not call that a failure either. It is what tired people do, and God has never once been startled by tired people. A good many of the psalms came out of exactly that place, and He kept every one of them in the book.

God is not weary of you, and your request has not worn out its welcome with Him.

The Word shows Him bearing long with His own people while they cry out to Him day and night, which is patience described from His side of the table rather than yours. On the mornings your own words run dry in a freezing room, the Holy Spirit goes on praying through you.

The Welcome Was Never Withdrawn

Jesus told a story about a widow and a judge, and He told His disciples the point of it beforehand.

> And he spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint; > Luke 18:1 (KJV)

Not to faint. That is the reason He opened His mouth, and the entire story depends on it.

Notice what He doesn't say there. He doesn't say pray better. He doesn't say find the formula that works. He hands His people permission to keep coming back with the same request, and the woman in His story never changes her sentence once from beginning to end.

That is the turn, and it is smaller and far sturdier than a technique. Asking again is not a method that works where your first try failed. It is a return, made by someone who was never sent away, to a Father who never once closed the conversation.

Your second asking is a return, never a repair.

Scripture hands you a Father who is the opposite of reluctant, and the Holy Spirit has already carried you as far as this table.

Declare this over yourself

You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so what follows is not a claim made out of your own authority. It is agreement, said back to God in His own words, while the Holy Spirit carries it. How He orders the rest of it is His to decide, and He answers in His own way and in His own time.

Read this over the clean page while the soup is on, in the voice you use for a delivery list. Christ put you inside the door, not the quality of your asking, and no wording of yours paid for that and none of it can spend it down. What follows lifts a weight off a steward's shoulders. It orders no part, books no engineer and names no total, because the figure on that estimate and the day it is settled have been God's business the whole winter.

I am allowed to ask again today, and the same request goes onto the second page in the same words. The first asking was not a mistake, and a boiler that still clicks without catching is no grade on it. The written Word of God says Jesus taught His people to pray always and not to faint, so I stand inside that welcome rather than inside my own wording. I am running no technique here, and I am not hunting the sentence that unlocks anything. The Holy Spirit helps me pray in a kitchen this cold, and He has never once wanted a better sentence out of me than the one I have. He is not tired of me, and I have the courage to write it down a second time and let the rest of it rest with God.
