Faith Not Feeling2 Corinthians 5:7

The Mug Left No Ring Beside the Bible

This message is for A woman whose morning prayer beside an open Bible produces no warmth, tears, or inner assurance needs a clear way to place her reliance on the written Word without treating honest emotion as either enemy or evidence.

For the woman whose prayer this morning was honest, unhurried, and completely quiet.

You set the cup down at ten past six and it hasn't moved since.

The coaster underneath it is still dry. You read the passage slowly, the way you were taught, and then you prayed without hurrying anything or performing for anybody. No warmth rose in your chest. No tears came anywhere near your eyes. No settled assurance descended over the kitchen the way it occasionally used to.

So you look from the open Bible to the untouched tea, as though one of them might account for what happened at this table. The page declares that we walk by faith and not by sight. Your body reports that nothing changed. Both sentences are true, and only one of them has any jurisdiction here.

The dry coaster shows that the cup stayed still. That is genuinely all it shows, and it has never once been summoned to testify about God. Neither has the flatness behind your ribs, though it has been quietly behaving as though it were a magistrate for years.

Your reliance is resting on what God has written, and a quiet morning has no power to unseat it. The Holy Spirit is at this table with you, in a kitchen that feels like any other ordinary Tuesday. Scripture gave your walk a foundation outside your own chest, and it did that long before you filled the kettle.

Two Witnesses, Two Different Questions

Every witness has a question it is competent to answer, and the confusion begins the moment one gets handed somebody else's.

Ask your emotions what this morning feels like and they will tell you honestly. Flat, exhausted, distracted, tender, numb, or oddly peaceful. That is an accurate report about a genuine interior, and it deserves to be heard rather than scolded into silence.

Ask the coaster whether the cup moved and it answers that too, with perfect accuracy and no opinion attached.

Now ask either one whether Christ is faithful this morning. Neither of them has ever held that office, and neither one was built to carry it. A witness delivering an answer outside its competence is how honest people arrive at mistaken conclusions about themselves.

You are not required to authenticate God with your own nervous system. Scripture carries its own authority through that door without requiring your body to let it in. The Holy Spirit makes it living whether the kitchen feels charged or completely ordinary.

I want to articulate the other half of that clearly, because a great deal of teaching gets this lopsided. Nobody is asking you to suppress feeling, distrust joy, or interpret tears as a weakness. Feeling is not the enemy of faith and never has been. It is simply not the authority.

Emotion genuinely moves a person, and God designed it to. A verse that once broke you open at a funeral is doing something the same verse cannot do when you are reading at the kitchen table before sunrise. That difference belongs to your circumstances and your body, not to the reliability of the sentence you are reading.

So we are not demoting feeling here, and we are certainly not asking you to flatten yourself into something religious and frozen. We are merely removing a weight from your emotions that they were never engineered to bear.

Where Your Reliance Is Actually Standing

Examine what Paul actually wrote, because the wording is doing careful work.

(For we walk by faith, not by sight:)2 Corinthians 5:7 (KJV)

He doesn't instruct believers to stop seeing. He doesn't call perception a sin or pretend the visible world is an illusion. He removes one specific item from the foundation, which is the authority of whatever you can presently observe.

Feeling has quietly occupied that same chair in a great many homes. It gets recruited to certify what the written Word has already settled, and it delivers an answer it was never qualified to deliver.

You are walking by faith at this table right now, without a single sensation to show for it. That is not a smaller walk than anybody else's. The Holy Spirit is holding you upright on it, and the footing underneath is Scripture rather than anything your morning managed to deliver.

Here's the practical relief in that. Your reliance doesn't have to be rebuilt every morning according to the weather inside you. It was put somewhere else on purpose, by Someone who knew exactly how variable a human body is.

The Dry Coaster Changes Its Job

Here's the turn, and it happens without you moving from the chair.

That dry coaster has been sitting there all morning functioning as a verdict. It announced the tea went cold, the prayer went nowhere, and the woman in this kitchen must be further from God than she was last spring.

Now give it back its actual occupation. It is a small cork disc that keeps a ring off the furniture. It has no standing in this matter and it never applied for any.

The moment the coaster stops being a judge, the table stops being a courtroom. You are not on trial in your own kitchen at ten past six in the morning. You came, you read, you prayed, and the record of that is in safer keeping than your recollection of how it felt.

Consider how many mornings you have already devoted to this. Through the seasons when prayer felt luminous and the far longer stretches when it felt like reading a railway timetable, you kept coming back to this same chair. That is not a thinning faith. That is a durable one, carrying a question nobody ever offered to carry alongside you.

The Holy Spirit established the matter of whose you are long before you sat down.

You came to God this morning, and nothing about the outcome is being weighed against you. Scripture declares whose you are without once consulting your emotion, and the Spirit keeps that settled while the cup goes cold beside you.

Declare this over yourself

You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so what follows is not a claim made out of your own authority. It is agreement, said back to God in His own words, while the Holy Spirit carries it. How He orders the rest of it is His to decide, and He answers in His own way and in His own time.

Read it aloud in the kitchen with the cup still where you left it. You are not talking your way into standing with God this morning; you were brought into Christ long before the kettle went on, and the last hour cannot touch that. These words ask God for no sign and no timetable. They name what is already true at this counter.

My faith is not my feeling; it is His word, and it holds at ten past six whether or not I feel it. Scripture puts my walk on ground outside my own chest, and the written Word of God steadies me while the cup goes cold and the coaster stays dry. This counter went quiet, and quiet is not distance from God, whatever I have been calling it since spring. The Holy Spirit keeps that Word living in me whether tears come or stay away entirely. I am His, and a warmth that never arrived has no power to revoke it. So I wash the cup, let the coaster go back to being a coaster, and leave the warmth and its timing in God's hands.
