For the believer who prayed carefully over a hard page at dawn and then checked inside for a result that never arrived.
A calculator has no opinion whatever about your prayer, which is exactly what makes it the safest object on the table.
It went dark because nobody pressed a key for two minutes. That's the whole explanation. It isn't commenting on the amen you just said, it isn't grading the sincerity of the asking, and it was never wired to notice whether God had heard you. The display simply timed out at ten past six in a quiet kitchen.
The trouble is that you read it anyway.
Picture the table for a moment, because you have sat at one exactly like it. There is a budget sheet with a column that will not behave. There is an open Bible resting above the figures, a pen, a cold cup of coffee, and a ledger you have kept faithfully for years. You prayed over all of it, plainly and honestly, for wisdom, provision and clean decisions.
Then you said amen, and you waited, and nothing rose. No warmth moved across your hands, no lift came behind your eyes, and the difficult numbers stayed precisely as difficult as they were before. You sat another thirty seconds giving it every chance. Then you began to wonder whether the absence of any feeling meant the prayer had not really become faith at all.
Your faith is not a figure you read off your own body after praying. The Holy Spirit is at work in a quiet woman at a kitchen table before dawn. Scripture rests faith on what God has said, never on what your nerves report back.

What a Dark Display Can Honestly Measure
You have spent years learning to read instruments properly, and you are unusually good at it. You know that a reading means nothing until you know what the instrument was built to measure.
A calculator measures arithmetic. A tape measure tells you about length and never about strength. A thermometer reports the temperature of a room and stays perfectly silent about whether the house is safe. Not one of them is unreliable. Each of them simply answers the one question it was made to answer, and goes quiet on everything else.
Your chest is an instrument too, and it is a good one for the work it was designed for. It reports grief, delight, dread, relief and tenderness, and God gave you every one of those readings on purpose. What it cannot do, and was never built to do, is certify whether the God of heaven received your prayer.
You are not being told anything about God by a body that reported nothing this morning. The written Word puts the whole weight of your believing on the character of God, which is not a reading any instrument on your table was built to take. The Holy Spirit keeps you standing there while every one of them stays quiet.
I want to say the careful half of this plainly, because articles on the subject tend to overcorrect and leave a woman apologizing for her own heart. Nobody is asking you to flatten yourself, to go cool on purpose, or to treat warmth as a lower grade of prayer.
Feeling genuinely moves a person, and God made it to move them. When tears arrive while you pray, receive them as a kindness and thank Him out loud for them. Just never let a kindness start acting as an auditor.
Walking When the Numbers Will Not Move
Paul put the whole matter into one short line inside a bracket, and the smallness of it is part of the mercy.
(For we walk by faith, not by sight:)2 Corinthians 5:7 (KJV)
Walking is such an unglamorous word. It isn't soaring, not trembling, not being overwhelmed at a kitchen table before the household wakes up. It is what a person does with ordinary legs, one step and then the next one, and it looks like almost nothing from the outside.
Sight, in that sentence, is the entire department of what you can currently verify. Your eyes belong in it. So does the column that will not balance, the dark display, the warmth you waited for and did not receive. Paul isn't insulting any of it, and he isn't asking you to pretend the column balances. He is telling you which of the two is carrying you.
You are walking by faith this morning, on a page that produced no evidence at all. The Word calls that walk the ordinary Christian way of going. The Holy Spirit is the One keeping your feet on it while nothing inside you confirms the ground.
There is a second line worth setting beside it, because it makes room for everything you have been trying to suppress.
Trust in him at all times; ye people, pour out your heart before him: God is a refuge for us. Selah.Psalm 62:8 (KJV)
Read the two halves together and notice that they do not compete. Trust at all times, including the flat mornings. Pour out your heart, including the disappointment about the flat mornings. The verse never asks you to choose between trusting God and telling Him the truth about how little you felt.
The Audit You Were Never Asked to Run
Here's the turn, and it's small enough to fold into the ledger and carry through the day.
You have been running an audit on yourself that nobody assigned to you. Every morning you pray, and every morning you check your own interior for a figure that proves the prayer went through. Every morning the figure comes back blank, so you file another quiet loss and start the day.
That audit has no authority. Your standing with God was settled at the cross and it is not recalculated at ten past six because your chest stayed still. You are in Christ because of what Christ finished, and no reading taken in your body this morning has the power to amend that entry.
You hold a standing in Christ that a silent morning has no authority to revise. Its ground is the written Word of God, stamped and tested long before you sat down at this table. The Holy Spirit keeps it living in you while the budget stays hard and the display stays dark.
So the audit can close now. Not because feeling is beneath you, and not because the disappointment has to be called fine, but because it was only ever measuring the room. You were asking a kitchen to tell you about God.
Declare this over yourself
You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so what follows is not a claim made out of your own authority. It is agreement, said back to God in His own words, while the Holy Spirit carries it. How He orders the rest of it is His to decide, and He answers in His own way and in His own time.
Say this over a page that has not balanced. The place you are speaking from was entered by Christ and has never once been recalculated, least of all by you. Nothing in these lines names a figure, fixes a date, or hands God a column to fill in.
My faith is not my feeling, and a quiet chest at ten past six is no evidence against it. Scripture says we walk by faith and not by sight, and that is the ground under me while the budget stays exactly as hard as it was. The Holy Spirit is here at this table with me, and He is not waiting on my warmth before He works. I refuse the audit I was running on myself, where an unmoved body meant an unheard prayer. I am free to pour out my heart to God whenever it fills, and I am free to trust Him on the mornings it stays flat. My hand is on His word, and my whole weight is on what He has said. I leave the figures, the answer and the timing with Him.
