The Concordance Closed Without a Feeling

For the careful reader who finished tonight's study and felt nothing at all.

The concordance is thick enough that closing it sounds like a cupboard door.

A pencil worn down to a stub lies in the gutter of the desk, and beside it sits a glass of water you didn't drink. The lamp throws one yellow circle over the open Bible and leaves the rest of the room in shadow. You have been at this table for ninety minutes, and you did the work honestly.

You examined the surrounding context and compared the repeated phrase across six different passages. You recorded two genuine questions in the margin instead of pretending to answer them. Then you closed the book and waited for something to move inside you.

Nothing moved. No warmth rose in your chest, no confidence arrived, and your hands remained as steady as they were at seven o'clock. The room holds exactly the temperature it held before you began.

So the familiar question comes back the way it always does this late in the evening. Did the study fail? Has the truth not really landed, because nothing inside you signed for it?

Let me put the answer plainly before we open another page.

Your faith is resting on what God has written, and a quiet chest cannot overturn it. The Holy Spirit is in this room at this hour, doing the same quiet work He was doing at seven. Scripture set the ground of your walk outside your own reactions long before you pulled out the chair.

What a Closed Book Can Report

A book reports what it says, and that is the entirety of its testimony. It turns out to be far more than enough.

Your body reports something else entirely. It tells you about sleep, about the hour, about the argument at four o'clock, about the coffee you shouldn't have had. Those reports are honest and worth hearing, but they answer a different question from the one you actually asked.

You asked whether the passage is true. Your body answered whether your body is tired. Two witnesses spoke at this table tonight, and only one of them was ever qualified to testify on that particular subject.

You are not required to feel a truth in order to be standing on it. Paul set his line down in a letter that has outlived every mood anybody ever read it in, and what Scripture puts in writing never waits on your pulse. The Holy Spirit keeps it living under your hand whether this room warms up or stays cool.

That isn't a demand to go numb. Feeling is a gift that genuinely moves people, which is why God filled the Psalms with so much of it. When warmth arrives, receive it gladly and don't apologize for it afterward. When it doesn't arrive, you have forfeited no ground at all, because the ground was never built out of warmth.

Consider how peculiar the alternative would be. A reader would have to generate the correct inward sensation before the sentence on the page became reliable, which would make the reader the author of his own certainty. Nobody has ever carried that responsibility successfully, and God never handed it to you.

A Reading Is Not a Ruling

There is a difference between a reading and a ruling, and the entire evening turns on it. A reading records a measurement at a particular moment. A ruling settles a matter permanently.

Your quiet tonight is a reading. It records one careful person at a desk at nine in the evening, with a lamp burning and a long day behind him. The reading is accurate, and it is also not a verdict on whether God has spoken.

The difficulty begins when a reading gets promoted above its office. Somewhere along the line you learned to treat the absence of a feeling as a judgment, and judgments are heavy to carry around. A person carrying one of those begins to study in order to be reassured rather than in order to hear.

The Holy Spirit has never once taught on a curve.

You may study without auditioning, because nothing at this desk is being graded. An inheritance is what Scripture hands you here. An examination is what you have been sitting for all evening, and the Spirit who teaches you never set that paper.

Notice what that quietly liberates. You can write a question in the margin, leave it unanswered overnight, and go to bed without filing your own honesty as unbelief. You can also admit that the passage moved you profoundly last April and moved you not at all this evening, and neither report changes a syllable of the passage.
