For the believer who quietly stopped attending to healing accounts because every retelling grew.
A true account gets smaller when you check it, and it gets stronger in the very same moment.
That reads backward, so let me set it down slowly on the table between us. In 1981 a woman in Illinois was gravely ill, and people who loved her asked a Christian radio audience to pray for her. Letters went out to that audience and letters came back. A report of a striking, sudden recovery followed, and Craig Keener has since examined that account, with its medical and witness documentation, in his work on miracle claims.
Watch what happens in your chest when you read a paragraph like that one. Something in you leans forward for about four seconds, and then a hand goes up inside you. You've met an account like this before, and by the third telling the crowd had doubled, the illness had a worse name, and the recovery had shrunk to five minutes.
So you set the whole subject down on a shelf, and you weren't wrong to be careful with it.
You can keep a true account without enlarging it, and you can stay careful without closing the door. Scripture holds the authority in this room rather than any letter, and the Holy Spirit has never needed a story stretched before He would use it.

What the Retelling Does to a True Account
Nobody sets out to enlarge a healing account. It usually happens because the person telling it loves you and wants you to feel what they felt in the room.
So a detail gets rounded up. A month becomes a week. One careful sentence from one doctor becomes a whole corridor of doctors who had nothing to say. By the time the account reaches your kitchen it is wearing a size too big for its own evidence, and you can hear the seams pulling.
Here is the cost you have quietly paid for that. You learned to brace at the first sentence, and bracing is a whole body posture. You can't lean toward something while you are holding your breath against it, so the subject went into a drawer and the drawer stayed shut for years.
Nobody noticed. There was no argument and no walkout, just a believer who stopped bringing the present tense into the room and got very good at changing the subject at the door.
The problem was never your carefulness, and God has never asked you to hand it over. Scripture tells you to test what you hear and to hold on to what is good, and the Holy Spirit is the Spirit of truth rather than the spirit of pressure.
Keeping the Letter and the Bible on One Table
Set two objects side by side on a table for a moment. One is a letter. The other is a Bible.
They are not the same kind of object and they never were. The Bible carries authority that does not depend on anybody checking it. The letter carries a report, and a report is only ever as strong as the record standing behind it. The trouble starts when somebody slides the letter on top of the Bible, and it starts again when somebody sweeps the letter off the table altogether.
Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.1 Thessalonians 5:21 (KJV)
That verse hands you a third option, and you may not have known it was sitting there. You are allowed to examine an account, say plainly what the record supports, leave the unclear parts unclear, and keep what stands after all of that. None of it is unbelief. All of it is obedience with the lights on.
You are free to examine an account slowly, because examining is the obedient thing to do with it. Scripture puts that testing into your own hands on purpose, and the Holy Spirit leads an unhurried reader into truth without once rushing them.
What This Account Cannot Be Asked to Carry
An account can describe what happened to one woman in one year. It cannot describe your week, and it was never built to.
It can't tell you why the prayer you prayed in March came back quiet. It can't be laid along your body like a ruler. It can't turn somebody else's recovery into a bill that you now owe. Those limits are not an embarrassment hiding in the footnotes of the book. They are a protection, and the protection is yours.
When a record is only allowed to say what it actually knows, you get to stay a person instead of becoming the next case somebody argues about. Nobody is handed a reason to weigh you and find you wanting. Nobody gets to read your continuing pain as a report card on your faith.
Your body is under mercy and not under comparison, whatever any account says. Scripture names you as Christ's own rather than as an exhibit, and the Holy Spirit guards your dignity while every outcome stays where it belongs, with God.
The Sentence That Was True Before the Letter
Here is the turn, and it is quieter than an argument.
The constancy of Jesus does not come from that letter. It was true the year before the letter was written. It was true on the morning it was read aloud, and it stays true if you never hear another account as long as you live.
> Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever. > Hebrews 13:8 (KJV)
Read the middle of that verse again. Yesterday and for ever are the two ends of it, and today is set between them holding the same name. The letter did not put today into that sentence. Today was already there, and the letter only refused to let you keep the word empty.
So the question changes shape in your hands. It stops being whether you can prove a miracle to somebody, and it becomes whether you are willing to stop closing the present tense before God has finished with it.
You stand in Christ's today rather than only visiting His yesterday. The written Word says His unchanging life over your ordinary week, and the Holy Spirit holds that door open in front of you without forcing one result through it.
Declare this over yourself
You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so what follows is not a claim made out of your own authority. It is agreement, said back to God in His own words, while the Holy Spirit carries it. How He orders the rest of it is His to decide, and He answers in His own way and in His own time.
A true account gets smaller when you check it, and your place in Christ does not move when anybody checks that. He put you where you stand before a single letter went out over any radio, and no sentence spoken tonight enlarges it or shrinks it. What follows opens something in you and orders nothing from heaven. How God answers, and when, stays wholly with Him.
I am not living in the wrong century. He has not changed, and no year printed on a letter dates Him. What He did then, He is doing now, and Scripture says that over my present week whether or not anybody writes a letter about it. I am done with the habit that closed every account before I had finished reading it. I hold what is documented at its own honest size, because the Holy Spirit has never asked me to stretch a story in order to trust Him. I am not a comparison, a proof, or a verdict on anybody's body. My carefulness and my hope stay in the same open hand, and the letter stays on the table with the verse beside it while God does what only God does.
