For the believer who has quietly been reading the word unexplained as though it meant explained away.
Nine twenty on a Tuesday morning, kitchen table, radio off, one pen.
A retired inspector writes three dates in a straight column down the side of a ledger and rules a line underneath them. July 2008, then November 2016, then February 2018. He has written columns like that for forty working years, because dates tell you what a paragraph will try to hide, and the space between two of them tells you whether anybody was in a hurry.
Then he sits back, and the room is very quiet, and he notices that he is slightly afraid of what he is holding.
You may recognize the feeling. It arrives when a subject you had filed under settled quietly asks to be opened again. Most of us would rather keep a thing filed. A file that stays shut cannot disappoint anybody, and you've already been disappointed enough by this particular one.
You are not choosing between a careful mind and a living God, because you already have both. Here is the whole of it, with no picture on it: unexplained means the doctors ran out of answers, and it has never once meant that nothing happened. The Holy Spirit works freely in a person who checks the dates before believing the paragraph. Scripture has never handed anybody a Christ who needs the reader half awake.

What the Word Unexplained Actually Means
A committee has a narrow vocabulary, and the narrowness is deliberate.
When a medical panel writes that something is unexplained in the current state of scientific knowledge, it is making the smallest claim available. It isn't saying a miracle occurred. It isn't saying nothing occurred either. It is saying: we looked, we compared the records, we asked specialists, and we cannot account for this.
That's a modest sentence. It is also an honest one, and honest sentences are rarer in this subject than either side pretends.
You are holding a finding, not a verdict, and the difference belongs to you. Weigh what you hear and keep hold of what is good: that is God's word to you, and not a concession to your temperament. Somebody who weighs carefully is somebody the Holy Spirit can work with all day.
Here is where the trouble starts. Somewhere along the way, most of us learned to read that narrow sentence as a polite dismissal. We hear unexplained and our ear translates it into explained away, as though the committee had said the matter was over. It never said that at all. It said it had reached the end of what it was qualified to say.
The Gap You Have Been Living In
Between we cannot account for this and therefore nothing happened, there is a gap.
It is not a wide gap, and yet a whole way of praying has been living inside it for most of your adult life. That is where the half-belief sits. You say the words, you mean them, and somewhere behind your eyes you have already written the report for God and filed it before the week began.
Nobody put that gap there on purpose, and you didn't choose it. It formed the way ruts form, by ordinary traffic over ordinary ground, one disappointment and one overstated account at a time.
You are not being asked to abandon your standards in order to leave that gap. The Holy Spirit walks a person out of a rut without once shaming them for how the rut got worn. Scripture nowhere grades a careful believer as the lesser kind.
Consider what an inspector actually does for a living. He doesn't decide whether a building is beautiful. He decides whether the beam under your floor will hold the weight you intend to put on it. He is not a judge of the whole house, and every good one knows the boundary of his own report.
A medical committee knows the same boundary. It can tell you the beam is sound. It can't tell you who's coming to dinner.
The Ledger Cannot Close the Case
Go back to the column of dates in the ledger.
A column of dates is a good servant. It orders events, it exposes hurry, and it keeps a story from growing in the retelling. Give a column of dates one job too many, though, and it quietly becomes a rule: that kind of thing happened back there, and back there is where it stays.
Nothing in the column says that. You supplied it.
> Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever. > Hebrews 13:8 (KJV)
One name, three words for time, and no seam anywhere between them. The verse does not put yesterday in the strong position and today in the leftovers. It refuses to rank them. Whatever Christ was on the page you read as a child, He is at nine twenty on a Tuesday morning at your own table.
You are inside Christ's today, not standing outside it with a clipboard. One name, three words for time, and no seam ruled between them. It is written, and it is written about this morning, while the Holy Spirit holds the joint open and pushes no outcome through it.
That verse promises you no recovery, no date, and no copy of Sister Bernadette's ending. It never has, and people have been badly hurt where it was made to. What it will not allow is a rule that quietly retires God somewhere between the last page of Acts and this morning.
Declare this over yourself
You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so what follows is not a claim made out of your own authority. It is agreement, said back to God in His own words, while the Holy Spirit carries it. How He orders the rest of it is His to decide, and He answers in His own way and in His own time.
Nobody is asking you to sign anything here. Christ entered you into His own account before you ruled the first line in that ledger, so the ground under these words is His work rather than yours. Say them the way an inspector leaves a file open, asking and not concluding. The finding is God's to write, on His own page, at His own hour.
I am not going to treat the word unexplained as though it meant nothing happened, and I am not reading about a God who has closed the file. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever, and Scripture says that over the column of dates on my table as surely as over the pages I grew up reading. My carefulness is a gift and not a wall, because the Holy Spirit has never asked me to stop checking in order to start trusting. I am not owed another person's ending, and I am not asking for a copy of one. I hold the crossing open, with an empty hand and no demand inside it. What God does, and when He does it, belongs to Him. I leave it there, and I keep asking.
