For the intercessor whose prayer book has one row that never filled in.
The eleventh chapter of Hebrews reads like a register of honor. Abel, Enoch, Noah, Abraham, Sarah, Moses and Rahab are named, and then comes a multitude the writer says he has no room to enumerate. Kingdoms were subdued, the mouths of lions were stopped, and weakness was converted into strength. The chapter builds and builds, and you can almost hear the room growing louder as it goes.
Then it sets down one sentence that hardly anybody ever recites.
And these all, having obtained a good report through faith, received not the promise:Hebrews 11:39 (KJV)
Read that line slowly, because it awards a good report to people whose promise never arrived in their hands.
That verse has been sitting in your Bible the entire time you have been maintaining your book. You open the book near midnight, run one finger down the answer column, and every row carries something recorded in it.
One row holds a date and three words. Another mentions a landlord, or a hospital corridor, or a telephone call that went better than anyone anticipated. Beside your sister's name there is unmarked paper and nothing else.
The blank beside her name is an empty space, not a sentence God wrote about you. Hebrews 11 remains in Scripture precisely because a good report and an empty hand can belong to the same person. The Holy Spirit is with you in this row tonight, and not one syllable of accusation is coming from Him.

What the Roll of Honor Leaves Open
Nothing in that verse explains itself, and the writer makes no attempt to assist it along.
He doesn't say the promise stayed away because the people were negligent, and he drops no hint of a fault, a mistaken word or a weak hour. He sets faithfulness and an unreceived promise down on the same line, lets them both stand there, and continues.
Notice how much latitude that leaves you. If Scripture is willing to hold a good report and a blank in one breath, then your book is permitted to hold them too. The rows that filled in are not a scoreboard, and the row that didn't fill in is not an evaluation.
You have been interpreting that clean paper as handwriting, and it isn't handwriting at all. It's the absence of an entry, which is an entirely different object from the presence of a verdict.
You are not on trial underneath this silence. The Holy Spirit has not gone out of the room to retrieve an accusation against you. Scripture names faithful people whose promise never arrived, and it does not designate one of them a failure.
Consider what you have actually done here. You prayed through three midnight watches for someone who cannot see you doing it, and you asked other people to agree with you. You maintained a book, which means you kept believing there would be something worth recording.
That isn't a diminishing faith wearing out at the edges. That's an enduring faith carrying a question nobody offered to carry with you.
Pain Reaches for the Word Because
Grief wants explanation. It goes searching for a because, and when God has not supplied one, it builds a because out of whatever is lying around the kitchen at one in the morning.
Because I doubted halfway through. Because she has never desired this the way I want it. Because my words came out in the wrong arrangement.
Not one of those sentences originated with God. They came from an exhausted mind attempting to make an unbearable circumstance orderly, which is a very human occupation at that hour.
We are not going to employ them here, because a false reason isn't comfort. It's an accusation in a tidy coat, and you have carried plenty tonight without appending a charge that nobody has substantiated.
You have permission to leave the reason unnamed. It is written down and then left undisturbed. A good report, a promise that never arrived, and no explanation set between them, while the Holy Spirit sits beside an open ache without hurrying it toward a conclusion.
Your love for her is not measured by how much asking you have remaining in you tonight. Being exhausted doesn't cancel love, and putting the pen down doesn't erase three years of faithful praying.
The filled rows can be released from the comparison too, because their notes belong to their own hours. One belongs to a corridor with a failing light in it, and one belongs to a landlord's telephone call on a Tuesday. God has not organized your book as a ranking of the people He prefers, and no row in it is evidence against another.
The Watch Nobody Sees You Keeping
Intercession is peculiar work, because almost none of it is visible to anyone.
Your sister doesn't know the hours, and nobody at church is tabulating them. There is no recognition for the nights you got up when the house was cold and prayed for someone sleeping soundly two states away. The entirety of it happens in one room with a lamp on and the door shut.
So when the answer column remains empty, there is nothing on the outside left to examine. Nobody can point and say, there, that is what you built. Only the blank is visible, and a blank is extremely easy to mistake for a report card.
Hear this carefully, because it is the one particular the blank cannot tell you. The hidden watch is what God has observed all along, and He never required a ruled column to tell Him it happened.
Every hour you have devoted to her was received the moment you gave it. The Holy Spirit has been praying alongside you the entire time, in groanings that no pen could transcribe. God's word keeps a record no ruled column was ever built to hold.
Close the door on the notion that everybody else received something because they prayed better than you did. Hebrews will not let that notion stand, because the chapter keeps people with wildly different outcomes inside one faithful company and never separates them into a first rank and a second.
The Verdict You Started to Pencil In
The turn here is not a line materializing at last in the answer column.
It's smaller and nearer than that. Somewhere in the previous year you began to pencil a verdict over yourself, faintly, in a margin where nobody could decipher it but you. Not a failed intercessor, not in those words, but a quiet suspicion that the blank was about you and that a different category of believer would have seen that row fill in by now.
That sentence is the one thing on the page God did not compose. Look at the line again, because it is blank and that is the entirety of it.
Your standing with God is settled in Christ, not scored in the margin of your own book. Scripture puts your name in His own hand rather than in a column. On the nights when your own resilience lies down first, the Spirit keeps the watch.
Your sister isn't a project you failed to complete. She is a person you love, and she was never a row to finish. The need is not a measurement of you, and the book was never a performance evaluation.
Tomorrow, when daylight reaches the page, you can determine what belongs in the record. It may be only the date and two words, sat quietly, which is a truthful entry. A book is permitted to hold presence as well as outcomes.
The blank may also remain blank for good. An entire life contains questions that never turn into explanations, and completion belongs to God rather than to columns that human hands ruled onto ordinary paper.
Declare this over yourself
You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so what follows is not a claim made out of your own authority. It is agreement, said back to God in His own words, while the Holy Spirit carries it. How He orders the rest of it is His to decide, and He answers in His own way and in His own time.
Say these out loud with the book shut and your hands where they are. Christ brought you into the family Himself, and there is no line anywhere you are still filling in to belong. Saying the words writes nothing into the answer column, and it hands God neither a date nor a condition.
The blank beside my sister's name records no answer, and a blank is not a verdict on me. No charge God never filed is mine to carry, and I refuse every invented because. Scripture gives a good report to faithful people whose promise never arrived, and my name is kept inside that same company. I am His in the unanswered place, and the Holy Spirit keeps the watch while I rest. I love her without owing anybody an outcome. My book is closed, my hands are empty and open, and why that line stayed blank belongs to God.
