Unanswered PrayerPsalm 13:1-6

The Room With No Answer In It

This message is for to carry an unanswered request without explanation, without blame, and without pressure to ask again today

For the one who slows down outside a closed door and has never once said why out loud.

Two tins of paint, unopened, still wearing their original price labels, standing against a cream wall in a room with the door permanently shut. Behind them, a square of carpet a shade darker than the rest of the floor, where a chest of drawers stood for two years before it was given to somebody else's house.

He knows that exact square without opening the door, which is how a person knows a room he has stopped entering altogether. It is half past four on an August afternoon, the landing is still generous with light, and there is no practical reason to have stopped moving.

Years ago he and his wife prayed that this room would become a nursery. They did not pray carelessly, and they did not pray only once. They asked with hope, with tears, with other people praying beside them, and with more courage than either of them knew they had.

It did not become a nursery. Everybody calls it the spare room now, which is a practical name that fits neatly into conversation and tells nothing about the way he still slows down whenever he passes that door.

Perhaps you recognize a room like that. Perhaps yours is not a room at all, but an empty chair at a family table, or a name you stopped saying aloud because saying it made the silence unbearable.

You are carrying an unanswered request, and you have never once been carrying a verdict. Scripture holds the question and the trust on the same page without explaining the distance between them, and the Holy Spirit remains on the landing with you rather than waiting for the door to open.

The Room With No Answer In It

The Question Underneath the Question

An unanswered prayer usually makes a second question underneath the first one, and the second is quieter and lasts a good deal longer.

The first question is plain enough to say aloud on a difficult day. Why did this not happen? The second question is almost never spoken to anybody at all. What does the silence say about me?

That second question hides inside ordinary decisions for years at a time. You stop asking for anything expensive. You pray for other people because their hope is lighter to carry than your own. You avoid the room, the anniversary, the subject, and you tell yourself that peace has arrived, while some quiet part of you keeps searching your history for the failure that would explain everything.

I am only going to answer what Scripture actually lets me answer, which turns out to be a great deal. The silence is not evidence that the prayer went unheard. It is not a measure of your belief, and it is not a verdict handed down about your standing with God.

You are standing in front of God without a charge filed against you. Scripture never reads an unanswered request as a failure in the person who asked, and the Holy Spirit does not work by leaving you to guess at charges nobody ever brought.

An unanswered prayer is heavy enough on its own. It has never needed a second weight fastened underneath it, and you have been carrying that extra weight for years without anybody ever handing it to you.

What David Does and Does Not Do

There is a psalm in the middle of Scripture that walks into an unanswered room without pretending there is furniture anywhere in it.

How long wilt thou forget me, O LORD? for ever? how long wilt thou hide thy face from me? How long shall I take counsel in my soul, having sorrow in my heart daily? how long shall mine enemy be exalted over me?Psalm 13:1-2 (KJV)

Watch what David does not do there, because the omissions are the whole lesson. He does not diagnose the silence. He does not go rummaging through his own history for the fault that would account for it, and he does not rename his sorrow unbelief in order to look better on the page.

He names the absence exactly as it feels from where he is standing. Forgotten. Hidden from. Carrying sorrow every single day. Then he goes on talking to the One he has just said is hiding, which is the strangest and most faithful thing in the whole psalm.

Those words were kept. They were written down, set to music, given to whole congregations to sing, and handed forward for three thousand years without anybody editing the sharpness out of them.

You are heard while the question is still open, and not only afterward. The written Word preserved a man's how long inside worship instead of outside it, and the Holy Spirit carries honest sorrow directly into God's presence without pausing to tidy it first.

Where the Psalm Puts Its Weight

The psalm turns before anything in David's circumstances is described as changed, which is easy to miss and worth slowing down for.

But I have trusted in thy mercy; my heart shall rejoice in thy salvation. I will sing unto the LORD, because he hath dealt bountifully with me.Psalm 13:5-6 (KJV)

He does not retract the first two verses to earn the final two. The sorrow is not withdrawn, the question is not answered, and nothing in the room has been rearranged. That small word but is not an eraser. It marks the place where a man decides to put his weight while the room stays exactly as it was.

Trust here is not a lever set under God's hand to move something. Trust is where you rest when the unanswered thing will not move, which is an entirely different posture and a far kinder one.

His mercy is still mercy on this landing. His salvation is still yours on this landing. You are still His on this landing, with the door shut and the tins unopened.

You have an unchanged standing in Christ beside a door that never opened. Scripture speaks His mercy over you while the request stays unmet, and the Holy Spirit seals that belonging somewhere the silence cannot reach it.

The Room Cannot Ask You Anything

The turn here is smaller and steadier than an answer, and it comes the moment the questioning finally stops.

For years that room has seemed to ask something every time you pass it. What did you do wrong? What did you overlook? Why were you not enough for this one?

But the room is wood, plaster, carpet, and afternoon light coming through a window. It cannot question anybody, it cannot speak for God, and it has never once been given permission to try.

Two sentences are worth carrying down the stairs with you. Unanswered is not the same as unheard. Unexplained is not the same as condemned.

The silence may stay unexplained for a long time, and it does not get to be in charge of you while it does. You can walk past that door as a man still loved. You can pick up the paint tray, leave the light off, and tell God the plain truth without having to put an ending on it.

You are held right now, with the door closed and nothing solved. Scripture puts God's mercy underneath your feet rather than at the end of an explanation, and the Holy Spirit keeps the silence from ever hardening into a sentence against you.

Declare this over yourself

You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so what follows is not a claim made out of your own authority. It is agreement, said back to God in His own words, while the Holy Spirit carries it. How He orders the rest of it is His to decide, and He answers in His own way and in His own time.

Two tins of paint have stood against that wall for years without becoming anything, and what Christ did for you is not waiting on a decision of that kind. He finished it. It takes no second coat and no fresh plan from anybody on this landing. So the words below rest instead of pushing. They never reach for the handle and they name no year for that door, because the year was always God's to keep.

That shut door has held an unanswered request for years and has never once held a ruling about me. Scripture keeps David's how long on the same page as his trust, so my silence is lament rather than a finding against me. Nobody has explained this, and I refuse to supply a reason God has never spoken on this landing. The Holy Spirit stays with me here without asking me to tidy the grief first. I am His beside a square of darker carpet, exactly as I was on the evening we first prayed over this room. What God does with this is entirely His, and I place my whole weight on His mercy today.
