Inherited Teaching1 Thessalonians 5:19-21

You Were Never Handed a Gavel

This message is for A believer who felt joy in a room where God moved and then felt it curdle into guilt needs freedom to hold a new possibility without condemning the people who raised them.

For the believer whose joy in one room turned into guilt toward the people who raised them.

Picture a third floor room above a shuttered laundromat, eleven folding chairs dragged into a circle.

A bowl of clementines sits on the radiator beside them. A woman in a green cardigan hasn't raised her right arm past her ear since last winter. Two people rest a steadying hand on her shoulder, somebody prays for forty seconds, nothing loud or theatrical.

Then the arm goes up. All the way up, and then again, and she's laughing the way a child laughs at a light switch.

The man by the door laughs too, before he can rule on it.

A second later something plummets in his stomach like a coin down a drain. He learned to pray at a folding table, from a man who covered his bus fare for two years and stayed with him in a hospital corridor at four in the morning. That man taught him plainly, gently, straight out of the Bible, that this kind of thing belonged to another era. That man meant every word of it for his good, and that man was good.

So the laugh is still on his face while the verdict assembles silently behind it. If this is real, he was wrong, and there's no way to hold both. He holds neither, and he drives home with the radio off.

You recognize that drive, and you understand why the radio stays off.

You are free to keep what is good without putting the people who taught you on trial. The Holy Spirit does that examination alongside you, in the car, with the radio off. Scripture hands you a method for weighing something and keeping it, and no accusation is any part of the instruction.

You Were Never Handed a Gavel

The Verdict That Assembles Behind A Laugh

Here is what happened in your stomach that night, said as plainly as I can manage.

You felt a plain, simple joy. It arrived before your opinions could get their coats on, which is usually how joy arrives. Then a courtroom assembled itself around the joy, and somebody you love was already standing in the middle of it.

Nobody actually dragged him into that courtroom. You did it, in about a second and a half, because you'd been taught that a new possibility has to cost somebody their reputation. So the cheapest way to protect him was to put the joy down, and you have been putting it down ever since.

A courtroom convened itself in your chest, and God never issued the warrant. There is no bench here, no robe, no gavel anywhere. The Holy Spirit weighs what you saw beside you, and God's word has never once placed a verdict into your hands.

Notice how long you've carried this all alone. You've gone back to that green cardigan a hundred times, and you've never once said a word about it out loud to anybody. That is not a smaller faith going soft at the edges. That is a strong faith carrying a question nobody offered to help you carry.

What You Were Actually Handed

Paul wrote three short lines to a young congregation about exactly this pressure.

Quench not the Spirit. Despise not prophesyings. Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.1 Thessalonians 5:19-21 (KJV)

Look at what he does and does not ask for. He asks for testing, and testing is honest, unhurried work with your eyes wide open. He asks you to hold fast to what is good, which is the grip of a hand rather than the swing of a hammer.

He never asks you to hold a trial. He never asks you to sort the people who taught you into the wrong pile so the good can be kept.

Hold fast that which is good: it is written as an instruction given to a pair of hands rather than to a bench. You were handed a hand to hold fast with, never a gavel to bang. The Holy Spirit makes the good easy to know the moment it walks into a room, and Scripture leaves every verdict with God.

Notice the opening line too. Quench not the Spirit is written to believers, which means the flame can be damped down by careful, sincere people who only meant to keep the room safe. That sentence is not an accusation against anybody. It's a warning given ahead of time to everybody, including you, including me. The people who taught you were being careful with something precious, which is what careful people do.

Hold Fast Without Holding Court

The turn here is smaller than a ruling, and it is far kinder than the one you've been bracing for.

Freedom here looks remarkably ordinary. You keep the bus fare, the hospital corridor, the folding table and every hour that man gave you. You also keep the arm going up in a room above a laundromat. Neither one has to be given up, and nobody has to be sentenced for you to keep both.

There is no announcement owed to anybody here either, and there never was. This can remain quiet for as long as it needs to. A conversation may arrive one day, and it may not, and growth doesn't require a public correction to be real.

You are not required to stop where a man you loved stopped. The flame in you is not put out, and the Holy Spirit is not asking for anybody's reputation in exchange for it. What the Word gives you is room to go on and to stay grateful at the same time.

If sadness arrives while you sit with this, let it come. Outgrowing a conclusion that once made the whole world feel orderly is a real loss, even when what stands behind it is better. It is the honest weight of having loved somebody who gave you the best of what he had.

Notice what your hands have been doing all this time. A gavel is heavy, and holding one takes a grip that cannot receive anything while it is closed. That is the real cost of the courtroom, and it has been quietly expensive for you.

The gavel was never yours to begin with. Put it down on the table and leave it there, and notice how much easier your hands are to open when they aren't gripping it.

Declare this over yourself

You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so what follows is not a claim made out of your own authority. It is agreement, said back to God in His own words, while the Holy Spirit carries it. How He orders the rest of it is His to decide, and He answers in His own way and in His own time.

Say this with your hands open, on ground Christ put under you in a room full of folding chairs long before you could have argued for it. Nothing here schedules God or tells Him what belongs in the next room you walk into. This is somebody setting down something heavy, and there is no defendant anywhere in it.

Nobody ever handed me a gavel, and I am putting down the one I picked up. Scripture tells me to hold fast to what is good, and holding fast has never required me to condemn the people who raised me. The Holy Spirit is not quenched in me, and He is not asking me to choose between gratitude and freedom. I keep the bus fare, the hospital corridor and every hour that man gave me, and I keep an arm going up in a room over a laundromat. I receive more without accusing anybody of less. I am free to be surprised. My hands are empty of that hammer and open to whatever God is doing now.
