What I SawJohn 9:25

The Stone in the Peppermint Tin

This message is for A person who has kept one hour of their life in a tin at the back of a shelf and has never described it to anyone needs permission to hold that memory without an explanation and without an apology.

For the person who has kept one hour of their life in a tin at the back of a shelf and has never described it.

The street outside was still arguing about him when they called him back inside. Some of the neighbors said he was the same man who had sat begging on that corner for years. Others said he only looked like him. His parents had already been brought in once, frightened enough to hand the whole matter straight back to their son, and now the room wanted him a second time.

Every question they put to him was a demand for a mechanism. How were your eyes opened. Who did this to you. What do you say about him. He had mud, a pool, and a walk across town, and he had nothing that would satisfy a single person in that room.

He answered and said, Whether he be a sinner or no, I know not: one thing I know, that, whereas I was blind, now I see.John 9:25 (KJV)

He doesn't make it bigger in order to impress them. He doesn't make it smaller to keep the peace. He holds onto the fact and lets the explanation go, because the explanation was never his to give in the first place.

Notice exactly what happened to him afterward, because you have been braced for this your whole life. They put him out of the building. The room settled nothing at all. Then Jesus went and found him in the street, and that was the only hearing that ever really counted.

You are free to hold what happened to you without an explanation and without an apology. Scripture lets an honest witness speak plainly with no mechanism behind him, and the Holy Spirit keeps that witness near Jesus rather than near the approval of a room.

The Stone in the Peppermint Tin

The Weight Was Never the Hour Itself

There is a tin on the second shelf of a workshop, behind the jar of screws, put there on purpose by a man who knows exactly where it is. Inside sits a chip of gray stone about the size of a thumbnail, lifted off the ground of a place he has not been back to in fifteen years.

Twice a year he takes it out, turns it once between his fingers the way you would turn a coin over, presses the lid down with his thumb, and goes back to sharpening the mower blade.

I am not going to tell you what he saw. It is his. What I will tell you is what he does with it afterward, because you already know this part from the inside. He has rehearsed the telling of it about four hundred times.

In the van. At the sink. Once, most of the way through a conversation with his brother, right up to the breath before the first word, and then he asked about the gearbox instead.

Let me name the wound properly before anything gets lifted off it. The weight was never the hour itself. Inside that memory he is warm, and it costs him nothing at all to be there. The weight is the guarding of it, fifteen years of carrying something that has never once been allowed to be an ordinary part of a Tuesday.

You have been guarding a beautiful hour as though it were an accusation against you. The written Word gives an honest witness room to speak without a theory, and the Holy Spirit keeps that honesty clear of shame on one side and showmanship on the other.

There is a second cost too, and this is the one that has begun to frighten him. A memory that is never said out loud slowly thins. That is not because it was untrue. Nothing keeps its exact shape forever in the dark, with no other voice in the room to hand it to and take it back again.

A Stone Set Up Under an Oak

Near the end of his life Joshua took a great stone and set it up under an oak beside the sanctuary. He said of that stone that it had heard all the words the Lord had spoken to the people. A stone builds no argument and offers no defense. It cannot be cross examined, because it has nothing at all to add. It was simply there, and it heard.

That gray chip in the tin was never going to be evidence, and it was never meant to be. A witness and a piece of evidence are two different kinds of thing. You have spent years asking yours to do the job of the second one, and then feeling let down when it could not.

Your memory stands as a witness and never as the foundation you stand on. Scripture keeps Jesus at the center and the stone under the oak where it belongs, and the Holy Spirit will not let one private hour climb onto a throne nobody offered it.

See what that difference protects. Evidence exists to convince somebody who was not there, and it works or fails depending on whether a stranger accepts it. A witness exists because something really happened, and it does not become less true because of anybody's verdict. Mixing the two up is the reason an ordinary believer ends up quietly putting their own hour on trial.

Mary kept what happened around the birth of her son and turned it over quietly in her heart, and nobody has ever suggested she owed the neighbors a statement. Kept is not the same as hidden. That difference is what I want you to walk away holding.

The Courtroom Was Never in Session

You have been the prosecution, the defense, the clerk, and the jury in a courtroom that was never once called to order. There is no judge anywhere in that building. You built the whole courtroom yourself out of one kind face at a bus stop and four hundred rehearsals in a van.

An imaginary trial is very hard to kill, because it never gives the verdict that would end it. You supply the charge, the answer, and the break all by yourself, so it goes on and on at your own tired expense. Walking out is the only way it ends, and walking out needs nobody's permission.

Close it down. Not because you finally won the argument, but because it was never your court, and God has not been standing in the dock all these years waiting for you to get Him off.

Nobody, including me, has the right to grade what you saw. I do not know whether yours was a healing, a rescue, or a room going quiet at the exact moment it had to. I have not asked, and I am not going to. This page is not going to hand you a scale and ask you to weigh your hour against somebody else's.

Here is the freedom, and I want it plain on the table. You do not have to tell anybody. Not today, and not ever. The freedom was never in the telling. It sits in no longer needing to tell it.

You are released from the hearing, and no verdict is pending against you. Scripture lets one honest sentence stand without a mechanism propping it up, and the Holy Spirit closes that courtroom without throwing your memory away.

Declare this over yourself

You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so what follows is not a claim made out of your own authority. It is agreement, said back to God in His own words, while the Holy Spirit carries it. How He orders the rest of it is His to decide, and He answers in His own way and in His own time.

You are not giving evidence here, and nothing below is being filed with anybody. Whatever you say behind that shut door was settled for you in Christ before you ever lifted a chip of stone off the ground, and no hearing anywhere awarded it to you. God keeps whatever that hour meant, and He keeps the timing of any word He may say about it.

I hold this memory without an explanation and without an apology. Scripture lets an honest man say one thing I know and then stop, so I stop there too. The Holy Spirit keeps my witness truthful, which means I refuse to exaggerate that hour and I refuse to erase it. My memory is a witness and not my foundation, and Jesus stays at the center where He has always been. No room has the right to grade what happened to me. The court is adjourned, and I am walking out of a building that never had a judge in it.
