For the man who loves the guide who drew the map and keeps rereading the verse beside it.
What do you do with a line somebody sketched in pencil when you loved the hand that held it?
The paper falls out of a box of camping mugs and lands map side up on the floor. It isn't quite a map. A youth leader sketched it by hand a long time ago, with the parking area, the ridge, the stream and the campsite all marked, and a verse written beside every bend. You followed that page through freezing rain while he walked at the rear, counting heads and carrying the heaviest pack in the company.
One trail on it is crossed out in pencil, and beside the crossing there's a short note about what God no longer does.
You loved the handwriting before you ever reached the sentence, and that is exactly what makes this so tender. He taught you to pray in a room that smelled of rain soaked coats. He honored every promise he made to a fifteen year old. He made frightened teenagers feel safe outdoors in weather that alarmed their parents, and no courtroom you could build would hold all of that goodness.
Even so, the passage printed beside that pencil line has begun to open differently for you.
You can honor the man who sketched the map and keep the map open in your hands. The Holy Spirit is still traveling this trail out ahead of you. Scripture is the ground under your boots, and no drawing made from memory was ever asked to carry that much weight.
What A Hand Drawn Map Can And Cannot Do
A map redrawn from memory is a real gift, and it is also a record of one person's understanding on one particular afternoon. He gave you what he had. That is the most any guide has ever been able to offer anybody.
There's a quiet bargain fear tries when a beloved mark stops matching the printed page. It tells you that rethinking the pencil means rethinking the man, and that rethinking the man means throwing out the whole first mile. Everything in you refuses that trade, so you fold the paper and put it back in the box.
Nobody ever gave you the authority to run that trial, and God never asked you to open it.
Think how long you've been carrying this one on your own. You've driven home from meetings with the radio off, turning a verse over and never saying a word about it to anybody. That is not a smaller faith wearing through at the edges. That is a strong faith carrying a question nobody offered to help you carry.
A pencil line marks where somebody's understanding stopped, not where God stopped. God's word holds that page up. The Holy Spirit keeps your reading honest, and your gratitude survives every moment of it.
Careful teaching is worth honoring, and it is not the same as a final ruling. Your leader was working with the light he had been given, on a wet afternoon, for a room full of teenagers who needed something solid. That is faithfulness, not failure.
Notice how much of him you still carry without any effort at all. The instinct to count the people at the back of a group came from him. The habit of setting a verse beside a hard decision came from him. Those are not small inheritances, and none of them depends on one pencil mark.
The Guide Jesus Promised For The Whole Trail
Jesus made a promise about guidance that was never limited to the first mile of anybody's walk.
Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.John 16:13 (KJV)
Read the shape of that sentence slowly. The guiding does not stop, and the destination is all truth rather than the part anybody managed to hand you at fifteen. Jesus assumed His people would go on being led after the person who first taught them had said everything he knew.
That assumption is not a criticism of your leader. It's the ordinary condition of every believer who has ever lived, including him.
Nothing in that verse places the burden of it on you, either. Jesus doesn't describe a man who has to work the trail out alone by being clever enough or confident enough. He describes a guide who comes, who speaks, and who keeps walking people forward into more than they began with.
It is written that the Spirit of truth guides people into all truth, and Jesus put no end date on the guiding. Being led further is the normal Christian life, not a betrayal of your beginning. The Holy Spirit does the walking, and the Word says nothing at all about burning the paper you began with.
So the crossed out trail does not have to be erased, and the printed promise does not have to be argued with. Both can stay in front of you while you walk slowly and pay attention.
Honor And An Open Map Are One Trail
The turn here is smaller than a verdict about who was right, and it is far kinder.
Freedom looks like this. One hand can hold the original paper while the other holds a Bible that is still open. Your heart can bless the man who sketched the map while your reading keeps moving past the pencil. Nothing has to be announced, corrected or resolved at the next family gathering.
You don't have to settle everything this afternoon either. Guidance has a pace, and urgency is not the same as direction.
You have time to receive truth without staging a confrontation with anyone. Panic has never once been the pace of the Spirit of truth. God's word rewards a careful reader, and nothing printed on that page is going anywhere.
If sadness arrives while you sit with that paper, let it come. Outgrowing a line on a map you loved is a real loss, even when what replaces it is better. Grief on a trailhead is not evidence that you took a wrong turn. It's often the honest weight of having loved somebody who gave you the best of what he had.
The crossed out trail can stay exactly where it is. It becomes a record of where you began rather than a fence across where you are going, and you can be grateful for both.
Declare this over yourself
You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so what follows is not a claim made out of your own authority. It is agreement, said back to God in His own words, while the Holy Spirit carries it. How He orders the rest of it is His to decide, and He answers in His own way and in His own time.
Say this standing where Christ already put you, the way you once stood at a trailhead because somebody older brought you there. Nothing in it tells God which way the trail runs or how long the walking takes. This is a man who came to hear God, and there is no verdict anywhere in the sentences.
I bless the man who taught me to follow Jesus, and I refuse to put him on trial to make room for what God is doing now. Scripture is the ground under me, wider than a pencil line and older than all my questions. The Holy Spirit is my guide into all truth, and He has never once asked me to trade gratitude for honesty. I keep the old paper, and I keep the map open. I am free to be surprised by God without accusing anybody. I walk at the pace of peace, one honest step at a time. Whatever He shows me from here, and however He answers, the outcome belongs to Him.
