For the one who wrote the time down and has never shown the card to anybody.
Moses is standing in front of an entire nation on the plains of Moab, near the end of his life, and he draws one decisive line through everything he has just finished saying.
Some matters belong to God, he tells them, and some matters belong to you and to your children. The second kind you are to live by, carefully, for the rest of your days. The first kind you are to leave exactly where they are, without resentment and without a stand-in answer.
The secret things belong unto the LORD our God: but those things which are revealed belong unto us and to our children for ever, that we may do all the words of this law.Deuteronomy 29:29 (KJV)
Look at what that line does for the people standing in front of him. It doesn't rebuke them for having questions, and it doesn't offer them a theory to plug the opening with. It gives them somewhere to deposit the unknown, and then it sends them back to the ordinary duties in front of them.
You have something to deposit there. You know the exact hour it happened, because you wrote the hour on a card, and you have never shown that card to another living person.
You are permitted to record what happened and leave the cause unknown. The Holy Spirit is never honored by a certainty that reaches further than the evidence a man actually has. Moses wrote that line himself, and the Word gives the unknown somewhere to sit instead of a verdict to receive.
The Three Lines of an Honest Note
An accurate note has three lines, and the trouble always begins when somebody collapses them into one.
The first line is the observation. The clock above the catalog drawers stopped while you were praying alone at the long table, and the hands rested at four twelve.
The second line is the verification. Somebody took the clock down, opened it on a workbench, found the spring sound, and watched it keep good time for weeks afterward.
The third line is the conclusion, and yours reads: cause unknown.
That third line is not a feeble faith writing in pencil. It is the most honest sentence in the whole note, and it cost you more discipline than either line above it. What you feel when you look at it is the pressure to overwrite it with something more comforting.
Nowhere does God's word require a man to invent a cause in order to honor Him. Cause unknown is a finished line, not a blank one. Long before your clock ever stopped, the Holy Spirit was steadying careful people at the boundary of what they could see, and Scripture has never called that failure.
Why a Number Starts Talking
Once an hour becomes memorable, the mind immediately goes looking for a partner for it.
Chapter four, verse twelve. A date on an ancient form. The age somebody happened to be that year. The interval between two events, counted in months.
Search long enough and a match will always turn up. The chapters are many, the calendars are many, and the human mind is remarkably good at this particular game.
A match is not an assignment. Finding that a verse numbered four twelve speaks powerfully to you shows the verse is powerful, which was already true before the clock did anything at all. Sequence isn't commission. Resemblance isn't interpretation.
Think about how a match would behave if it were genuinely more than a coincidence. It would not need your protection, and it would not need you to stay quiet about the parts that do not fit. Something God has actually assigned carries its own authority through the years without you holding it up every time somebody raises an eyebrow. The matches you have been building need constant propping, which is the surest sign of who has been keeping them upright.
This is exactly where a careful person can be wounded. You spent a working life putting the right record under the right heading, and you know what it costs when somebody files a record under a heading it never earned. The pressure to file one unexplained hour under a message from God is the same pressure you resisted for decades at those drawers.
You never have to decode an hour that God has not interpreted. The Word hands you light enough for the next obedient step and no more. The Holy Spirit keeps honest curiosity from hardening into an authority nobody ever granted it.
When the Hour Stops Asking
The turn here is small, and it is not a better explanation of the clock.
For years that hour has been asking you a question every time it resurfaces. What did it mean. What were you supposed to do about it. Who were you supposed to tell. You've answered that you don't know a thousand times, and the answer never seemed to be accepted, because you kept treating it as a failure instead of a finding.
Change what that answer is doing. Not knowing is not a hole in your report. It is the last field, filled in correctly, by a man who refused to invent.
The moment you let it stand as a finding, the hour goes quiet. It stays in the book where you wrote it. It stops asking, because the question has already been answered, and the answer was honest the whole time.
There is a particular relief in that for a man who has spent his career among records. You already know the difference between an unfinished file and a file whose last entry is honest. One of them keeps you awake. The other one can be closed and shelved, and this is the second category.
Notice what is restored to you. You stop rehearsing the scene in order to sharpen it. You stop testing people in conversation to find out whether they would believe you. You go back to the long table, and to the prayer you were actually praying that morning, which was the real business of the hour in the first place.
Your memory is secure under Christ whether the hour is ever explained or not. It is written that your standing rests on the finished work of Jesus, and nothing that happened at four twelve adds anything to it. The Holy Spirit settles a man there and then leaves him settled.
Declare this over yourself
You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so what follows is not a claim made out of your own authority. It is agreement, said back to God in His own words, while the Holy Spirit carries it. How He orders the rest of it is His to decide, and He answers in His own way and in His own time.
Nothing here is a claim and nothing here is a lever. What you are about to read was already true of you in Christ before that clock ever stopped, and nothing you say now puts it there. Whatever God has kept to Himself remains His, and not one line below asks Him to open the file.
I keep the hour honestly, and I keep it without decoding it. Scripture tells me the secret matters belong to God and the revealed ones belong to me, so my memory of the clock at four twelve rests on His side of that line without any shame. I refuse to invent a message I never received, and I refuse to submit what I saw for anybody's approval. The Holy Spirit has steadied me at the exact edge of what I actually saw, and He has never once needed me to fill an empty field. Cause unknown is my honest final line, and I am at rest with it. I am not a case waiting to be judged, and my hands stay open.
