Believing For OthersMark 2:3-5

His Name on the Hospital Bracelet

This message is for A sister praying beside her skeptical brother before an operation needs to carry faith for him without making his kindness, his doubt, or the result her own responsibility.

For the sister who prays beside a brother who is kind about it and believes none of it.

The clock over the nurses' station said ten past six, and the operation was booked for half past seven.

He sat on the edge of the bed in a paper gown, turning the plastic band on his wrist steadily with his thumb. His name was printed on it under a number and a date, and the consent form lay signed on the trolley beside him.

She had been holding her question since the car park, and it came out plain: can I pray for you before they take you down. She asked it the way you ask for something small, so it could be refused without anybody having to say no.

He said, sure, go ahead, and he put both hands on his knees and went completely still while she prayed. When she finished he thanked her warmly, then asked whether she had managed to eat anything yet.

I want to stand in that moment with you, not in the operation and not in the waiting afterward. I mean the eight seconds after the amen, when your brother is kind to you about your faith and you can feel exactly how kind it is.

You know that kindness. You have met it in doorways, in corridors, at the ends of phone calls, and it never once became an argument, because an argument would have been easier to carry.

Your believing counts in that room whether or not one other person in it agrees with you. The Holy Spirit does not stand outside a hospital door waiting for the man in the bed to vote Him in. Scripture keeps the whole record of somebody carried to Jesus who never said a single word for himself.

His Name on the Hospital Bracelet

What Mark Wrote Down About Four Men

Let me put the weight down before I say anything about lifting it, because you have carried it a long time and I have no intention of hurrying you past it.

Prayer has been lonely work in your family. You're the one who prays over the meal when nobody else will, and the one who asks the nurse whether prayer is welcome in the room. You are also the one awake at one in the morning with the same name going round and round.

Somewhere in those years a sentence moved into the house and made itself very comfortable. It told you that your believing is a fond habit the family puts up with, and that nothing real can possibly happen while the man you love stays politely unconvinced.

Here is what Mark actually wrote down.

And they come unto him, bringing one sick of the palsy, which was borne of four. And when they could not come nigh unto him for the press, they uncovered the roof where he was: and when they had broken it up, they let down the bed wherein the sick of the palsy lay. When Jesus saw their faith, he said unto the sick of the palsy, Son, thy sins be forgiven thee.Mark 2:3-5 (KJV)

Read that last line again and put your finger on the word their.

Four men carried a paralyzed man across a town on a mat. The door was blocked solid by the crowd, so they climbed the outside stair, stood on a flat roof and opened it up with their hands. Then they lowered the man they loved through the hole, into the middle of somebody else's meeting.

The man on the mat says nothing at all. Not one word of his is written down anywhere: he doesn't ask, he doesn't argue his own case, he doesn't promise to do better afterward. He is carried, he is lowered, and the first voice he hears belongs to the Lord.

The roof was never his idea. In that fifth verse it is written that Jesus saw their faith, and the faith He saw was in the forearms of four men holding the corners of a mat.

You're holding one faithful corner, and that is a real thing to be holding. The Holy Spirit keeps your love from climbing onto the mat and calling control by the name of faith. Scripture gives your corner its whole weight without asking a single person in that ward to sign for it.

Stay in that a while, because it is most of what I have for you today. Heaven read the carrying, and heaven has always read the carrying, and it read it in four men whose names nobody bothered to write down.

Mark tells us nothing about what the man believed on the way there, and we won't build anything past that silence. The account gives nobody permission to override another person's will, to walk around a plain no, or to promise how any of it ends. What it gives instead is one clean picture of people bringing somebody they love into the presence of Jesus.

So take this off your shoulders. Your brother isn't a project you are running behind schedule on, and his politeness isn't a sin. He is allowed his questions, and not one of them is a charge you have to answer before they wheel him down the corridor. Your prayer was never meant to be persuasion said in a quieter voice.

You are free to carry love without carrying another person's will. Friends brought a need to Jesus and went no further at all, which is everything the written Word of God records them doing. What happens at the edge of your brother's own freedom is the business of the Spirit, in a place your hands were never built to reach.

What the Corner Actually Includes

The tiredness never came from praying. It came from counting every kind thank you as a refusal your brother had quietly signed, and then reading that count back to yourself all week long.

Put that count down somewhere you can leave it. Your standing with God was never put to a vote in your family, and it isn't being voted on in a pre-op room either.

You carry the corner, never the man's will. The Holy Spirit is already down that corridor, past the nurses' station, a long way ahead of the trolley. Scripture hands you a corner and then stops, and the stopping is mercy rather than a limit on you.

Here is what the corner actually includes. You may say his name to God as often as you want to, offer prayer when he allows it, and let it go entirely when he doesn't. You may bring him food, sit in the chair beside the bed, and love him in a hundred practical ways that need no explaining to anybody.

Here is what the corner does not include. You may not write what he believes, walk around a no he has given you, or read the result of an operation as a report card on your faith. If it goes well, that is the kindness of God and not your score, and if it is hard, that is not your failure either.

That last one matters, so let me say it plainly rather than let it slide past. The result of that operation is not a verdict on your believing. God's word never hands your standing over to an outcome, and the Spirit keeps your heart out of a courtroom your family never called.

Declare this over yourself

You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so what follows is not a claim made out of your own authority. It is agreement, said back to God in His own words, while the Holy Spirit carries it. How He orders the rest of it is His to decide, and He answers in His own way and in His own time.

None of this is leverage and none of it is a fee. Your name was printed into Christ the way his was printed onto that plastic band, by somebody else's hand and not by anything you managed before six o'clock this morning. So say it the way you sign a form you did not have to draft. It sets no clock running over that corridor, and it hands God nothing to countersign.

My brother is loved, and he is not a job I was given. Scripture shows me four men who carried what they could and left the rest with Jesus, so I hold a corner and I do not hold his will. What I believe beside this bed is enough for the hour we are in, and his kindness about my faith settles nothing about my faith. His questions are not charges I have to answer, and God's goodness does not wait behind them. I put down the count I have been keeping of the people who agree with me, and reading that corridor as my grade stops here. The Holy Spirit went down there ahead of me and stays after me, and He needs the permission of nobody in that building. I carry the love, and I leave the timing, the result and my brother's own freedom entirely with God.
